Overview
The Koya Ryujin Skyline is a scenic route approximately 43km long, running at an elevation of around 1000 meters along the border of Wakayama and Nara prefectures. Opened in 1980 as a toll road, it became free to access in 2003 and is now part of National Route 371.
The Skyline's main attraction is its stunning natural beauty. A vast beech forest stretches along the route, offering picturesque views throughout the year. The autumn foliage season, from late October to early November, is particularly spectacular, with the mountains ablaze in reds and yellows, creating a breathtaking panorama.
Furthermore, many tourist attractions are located nearby, including Koyasan and Ryujin Onsen. Koyasan is renowned as a sacred site of Shingon Buddhism, boasting numerous highlights such as Okunoin. Ryujin Onsen is famous as a 'beauty hot spring,' offering a relaxing respite from daily life.
The Koya Ryujin Skyline is perfect for driving or touring. The route features numerous ups and downs and curves, making for an exhilarating drive. It's also ideal for those wanting a leisurely drive while enjoying the scenery.
Rest areas are plentiful, including Michi-no-Eki Tanabe-shi Ryujin Gomasan Sky Tower, offering places to eat and relax. From viewpoints, you can enjoy panoramic views of the Kii Mountains.
