Unryu Valley

Overview

Unryu Valley is a ravine located on the middle slopes of Mount Nyohou in Nikko City, Tochigi Prefecture. It's at the headwaters of the Inari River, which flows east of Nikko Toshogu Shrine. From late January to early February during the severe winter months, the waterfall completely freezes, forming ice pillars tens of meters high. Referred to as an "Ice Palace," it's renowned as a hidden gem known only to a select few. While once known only to locals, its beauty has recently attracted many tourists. At the deepest point lies Unryu Falls. Its high altitude of around 1400 meters ensures freezing temperatures, and the abundant flow of clear water contributes to the numerous ice formations. This makes it known as a natural ice climbing ground, one of the best in the Kanto region. A forest road, built for the management of check dams, provides easy access, making it popular among hikers visiting the frozen waterfall. In spring, the melting snow feeds the valley with life, and the fresh greenery shines. Summer offers opportunities for leisurely walks through the lush valley and fishing. Autumn displays stunning foliage, ablaze with fiery reds and yellows. Unryu Valley is a nature-rich location that showcases diverse seasonal beauty, captivating visitors throughout the year. However, winter conditions include snow and icy roads, so caution is advised. Also, be mindful of the changeable weather in the mountains; pay close attention to your clothing and equipment.
