Tennoji Zoo, established on January 1, 1915, boasts a rich history spanning over 110 years. Spanning a vast area of approximately 11 hectares, the zoo currently houses around 1,000 animals of about 170 different species. Despite being located in the bustling heart of Osaka, its standout feature is the implementation of "ecological exhibits" that recreate natural landscapes. This approach allows visitors to observe animals in environments that closely resemble their native habitats, making it a beloved destination for those wishing to see wildlife behaving naturally.
Since its opening in 1915, the zoo has been a cherished part of Osaka's community. Serving as an urban oasis, it has evolved alongside the changing times, updating its exhibits and facilities to foster a better environment for coexistence between humans and animals. While maintaining its deep historical roots, the zoo has transitioned toward modern ecological displays, focusing on creating environments that respect the biological needs and natural habitats of the animals.
The zoo features various specialized zones. Key areas include the "African Savanna Zone," where you can see animals like hippos, giraffes, and lions, and the "Penguin Park & Sea Lion Wharf," which showcases aquatic environments. Additionally, the reptile house "I-Far" offers a chance to observe various reptile species in detail. These exhibits, designed to replicate natural landscapes as closely as possible, serve as excellent sites for both education and observation.
You can witness different animal behaviors depending on the season. March and April are particularly pleasant times to visit. The standard opening hours are from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM). However, on certain Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays in May and September, the closing time may be extended to 6:00 PM. Please note that some animals may become less active or move out of sight after 3:00 PM, so it is highly recommended to complete your tour of the major areas in the early afternoon.
At Tennoji Zoo, you can observe the natural lifestyles of animals from a close distance. Within the ecological exhibits, you can witness how animals spend their time in environments that mimic their wild homes. Walking through the expansive grounds, visitors can deepen their understanding of nature by exploring areas modeled after African or marine environments. The zoo is located in the Tennoji area, which is surrounded by vibrant commercial facilities, historic temples, and shrines. It is also adjacent to "Tenshiba," a popular open-air park area. After your visit to the zoo, you can easily enjoy dining and shopping in the neighborhood. The location is highly convenient for tourists, with excellent access via public transportation.
