Uwajima Bullfighting is a deeply rooted traditional combat sport in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture. Held in a specialized dome-shaped indoor arena, the spectacle features bulls clashing with immense power and skill. With four major regular tournaments held annually, it serves as a unique and vital piece of Japan's regional cultural heritage.
The origins of this tradition are steeped in legend. It is said to have begun in the late 17th century (the 1600s) when fishermen in Fuura rescued a drifting Dutch ship. As a gesture of gratitude, two bulls were gifted, and their subsequent battle sparked the tradition. Historical documents from the era of the Date clan's domain even describe organized bullfighting matches, proving that this practice has been preserved and passed down through generations for centuries.
The rules are simple yet thrilling: there is no fixed time limit, and the match continues until one bull retreats or flees, resulting in a victory for the other. Each bull possesses specific combat styles, and spectators can witness the mastery of ten different types of techniques. The dome-shaped indoor facility provides an excellent view of the bulls' raw strength and dynamic movements.
There are four regular tournaments held throughout the year: the New Year Tournament (January 2nd), the May Tournament (May 3rd), the Warei Taisai Tournament (July 23rd), and the October Tournament (held on the 4th Sunday of October or October 25th). Most tournaments take place between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. The gates typically open at 10:00 AM, so please check the official schedule in advance to plan your visit.
In addition to the regular annual tournaments, visitors can request specialized "Sightseeing Bullfighting" sessions through prior application. These private sessions are priced at 66,000 JPY for one match or 132,000 JPY for two matches (tax included). For convenience, free shuttle buses are often operated from the vicinity of JR Uwajima Station during major tournament days.
The arena is located near JR Uwajima Station, making it easily accessible. The surrounding area features various local sightseeing spots and restaurants within Uwajima City. During major tournaments, temporary parking for approximately 250 vehicles is provided at the Maruyama Park Sports Ground.
Eating and drinking are permitted inside the arena, and small shops are available on-site. Tickets can be purchased online via FamilyMart (credit cards and FamilyPay are accepted) or at designated local outlets. Admission is free for junior high school students and younger.
