Tennoji Zoo, which opened its doors on January 1, 1915, boasts a rich history of over 110 years. Spanning an expansive area of approximately 11 hectares, the zoo currently houses about 1,000 animals representing roughly 170 different species. Despite being situated in the bustling center of Osaka, its standout feature is the implementation of 'ecological exhibits' that replicate natural landscapes. This approach allows visitors to observe animals in environments that closely resemble their true habitats, making it a beloved destination for those wishing to see animals behaving naturally.
Since its inception in 1915, the zoo has been a cherished part of the Osaka community. The zoo features a wide variety of specialized exhibition areas. Key highlights include the 'African Savanna Zone,' where you can observe animals like hippos, giraffes, and lions, and the 'Penguin Park & Sea Lion Wharf,' which showcases aquatic life. Additionally, the reptile house, 'I-Far,' offers a chance to observe various reptiles in detailed settings. Visitors can enjoy different animal behaviors depending on the season. March and April are particularly pleasant times to visit. While the standard operating hours are from 9:30 AM to 5:00 PM (last entry at 4:00 PM), please note that on certain Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays in May and September, the zoo may extend its hours until 6:00 PM. However, since some animals may become less active or move to sheltered areas after 3:00 PM, we recommend scheduling your visit to the major exhibits during the earlier part of the day.
