Shiroyama Park is a vast, beautifully developed park located on a 192m high plateau in Kokubu, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The park is famous for its spectacular panoramic views: to the north lies the Kirishima mountain range, to the south the majestic Sakurajima volcano, and the calm waters of Kinko Bay. The facility is packed with diverse recreational options, including a children's playground, an outdoor stage, a 1,350m go-kart track, a Ferris wheel, and a putting golf course. Surrounded by approximately 30,000 trees of 34 different species, it is a place where visitors can spend an entire day immersed in nature.
Opened on May 23, 1978, the park covers an area of approximately 158,594 m² and has long served as a beloved community space. A notable historical feature is the C-62 type steam locomotive, weighing 91 tons, which was installed in February 1978. The park also serves as a cultural hub, hosting various seasonal events such as roasted sweet potato festivals and sketching competitions, which connect the local community with the changing seasons.
The centerpiece of the park is the 30-meter high Ferris wheel, which offers a bird's-eye view of the Kokubu plains, Sakurajima, and the Kirishima mountains. For more active fun, visitors can enjoy the go-kart track (approx. 1,400m loop) or the colorful battery-powered cars. Other highlights include a 9-hole putting golf course with artificial turf, a children's playground with jungle gyms and slides, and an observation deck within a 6-story building equipped with an elevator for easy access to the views.
The changing scenery is one of the park's greatest draws. In April, the park is adorned with about 630 cherry blossoms (including Somei Yoshino and Yaezakura), and in May, thousands of blooming azaleas create a vibrant landscape. Driving a go-kart through the cherry blossom tunnels in spring is a unique experience. During the summer (July 20 to August 31), the park remains open daily without scheduled holidays, making it a great spot for summer outings. The view during sunset is particularly enchanting.
There is something for everyone, from children to adults. You can enjoy a peaceful aerial stroll in the Ferris wheel, an energetic drive in a go-kart or battery car, or a relaxing game of putting golf. The park also hosts local community events like roasted sweet potato experiences, soba-making demonstrations, and even rocket-launching activities, allowing visitors to experience local culture amidst nature.
The park is conveniently located about a 10-minute drive from JR Kokubu Station and about 25 minutes from the Mibezan Kagoshima Airport IC via the Kyushu Expressway. Being a central point for Kagoshima sightseeing, it provides excellent access to the surrounding natural areas and the Kirishima mountain region.
As the park is quite large with various walking paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that cash is required for paying for the observation deck entrance and various ride fees. The observation deck is equipped with an elevator, making it accessible for those with mobility needs. While photography is permitted, please respect the public nature of the park and follow local etiquette.
