The Shiroyasaki Lighthouse is a historic Western-style lighthouse located in Shiroyasaki, Higashidori Village, Shimokita District, Aomori Prefecture. Completed in 1876 (Meiji 9), its construction took over three years. The structure is characterized by its impressive brickwork, standing 33 meters tall from the ground to the top. In 2022, it was officially designated as a National Important Cultural Property. The surrounding landscape features the sight of Kandachi horses—a local breed adapted to the harsh climate—grazing freely, creating a unique and breathtaking scenery where history and nature coexist.
This lighthouse played a vital role in supporting Japanese maritime shipping during the early Meiji era. It is renowned for its high-level brick construction techniques and is celebrated as the tallest brick lighthouse in Japan. It has also been selected as a Civil Engineering Heritage site by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers. As a precious cultural asset, it represents the technological progress of Japan's modernization and has long served as a guardian of the sea routes at the eastern tip of the Shimokita Peninsula.
The primary attraction is the historic brick exterior and the intricate internal structure. During guided tours, visitors can observe the heart of the lighthouse, including the light-reaching distance adjustment lenses and the arc lamp apparatus. The surrounding area provides a peaceful environment where you can view the lighthouse alongside grazing Kandachi horses. With a light intensity of 530,000 candelas and a visibility range of approximately 34 km, the technical prowess that has ensured maritime safety for decades is a key part of the experience.
Lighthouse tours are typically conducted from mid-April to early November. Please note that the lighthouse is closed during the winter season (from early November to mid-April). The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons: from the vibrant blues of the ocean and lush greenery in spring and summer to the more tranquil, quiet landscapes of autumn. Tours are often conducted in two sessions (morning and afternoon), so it is recommended to check the schedule based on the day's weather and timing.
