The Sakata City Art Museum is a sanctuary of art harmoniously integrated with nature, located on Mt. Iimori in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture. The museum sits on a vast site of approximately 30,000 square meters, with a facility area of about 3,000 square meters. Situated on a hill, it offers breathtaking panoramic views of Mt. Chokai, the Mogami River, and the cityscape of Sakata. The architectural design utilizes the expansive grounds to provide visitors with a sense of tranquility and peace. As a cultural hub rooted in the local community, the museum displays a diverse collection ranging from works by renowned Japanese artists to those of local masters.
Opened on October 3, 1997, the museum plays a vital role in preserving and passing down the rich cultural heritage of Sakata to future generations. It serves as a cornerstone for regional artistic promotion. Many of the exhibited works reflect the history, culture, and natural beauty of this land, making the museum not just a display facility, but a symbol of the region's identity and cultural depth.
The museum's collection includes significant works by masters of Japanese Western-style painting, such as Shigeru Morita, a recipient of the Order of Culture, and Keiro Kokuryo, a member of the Japan Art Academy. A major highlight is the opportunity to view works by artists deeply connected to the region, such as Western-style painters Choji Saito and Masayasu Sato, as well as the sculptor Tsuyoshi Takahashi. These precious collections, which evoke the local history and natural landscape, are carefully preserved and showcased primarily in the permanent exhibition rooms.
The museum is open from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to enjoy the art in perfect harmony with the surrounding scenery. The natural landscape changes beautifully with each season, offering new discoveries every time you visit. Please note that from December to March, the museum is closed on Mondays. We recommend checking the schedule before your visit to ensure a smooth experience.
