The Sakai Clan Garden is a designated National Scenic Spot located within the Chido Museum grounds in Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. The garden is characterized by a 'Tsukiyama Iseki' (hill and pond) landscape positioned to the north of the Onden (the lord's residence). The surrounding area is filled with lush greenery, featuring gentle grassy slopes, carefully placed rocks, and meticulously pruned shrubs. The landscape creates a beautiful composition where the changing colors of plants and the reflections on the water surface offer a unique view in every season.
This site was originally part of the Sannomaru area of Tsurugaoka Castle and served as the official residence of the feudal lords. Today, part of the Onden (the retirement villa of the lord) remains within the Chido Museum grounds. The Sakai Clan Garden was constructed to the north of this Onden and is recognized as a quintessential example of a 'Shoin-style' garden in the Tohoku region. The landscape, which integrates seamlessly with the historical architecture, is carefully preserved as a vital piece of local cultural heritage.
The center of the garden features a calm pond surrounded by rocks and shrubs. The water surface reflects the surrounding trees and the sky, creating a sense of profound tranquility. Visitors can also view the garden from the Onden (Sekisu-do), providing a classic perspective of the landscape. Depending on the season, the garden is adorned with blooming flowers such as white azaleas and other shrubs, adding vibrant color to the greenery. Additionally, the grounds contain various architectural styles, including Meiji-era pseudo-Western-style buildings and traditional thatched-roof structures, allowing you to witness the evolution of Japanese architecture.
It is highly recommended to visit from spring to early summer when the vegetation is most lush. The period when white azaleas and other flowers bloom is particularly beautiful, as the white blossoms dot the green landscape. During bright daylight hours, the colors of the sky and the surrounding trees are vividly reflected in the pond. Visiting during times when the seasonal color gradients of the trees and plants are most prominent will allow you to fully appreciate the garden's unique character.
Since the garden is part of the Chido Museum complex, you can explore the structural details of a traditional Japanese garden alongside museum exhibits. Viewing the garden from the tatami rooms of the Onden offers a deep understanding of the unique perspective intended in Shoin-style gardens. You can also walk through the grounds to observe the diverse architectural styles, from traditional thatched-roof houses to Western-style buildings with clock towers, all harmoniously arranged in one area.
The Sakai Clan Garden is situated within the Chido Museum premises. The surrounding area preserves several historical buildings that have been relocated for preservation, along with various exhibits and structures. Located near the center of Tsuroka City, the site is easily accessible to other local sightseeing facilities.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes when exploring the garden. While there is no specific dress code, appropriate clothing for the season is recommended.
