Sagae Park is a vast, beautiful park located in Nagaoka, Sagae City, Yamagata Prefecture. Its greatest attraction is the 'Azalea Garden,' one of the largest in the Tohoku region. The garden features approximately 43,000 bushes across 11 different varieties of azaleas, creating a vibrant sea of color. Additionally, the 'Sakura no Oka' (Cherry Blossom Hill) near the local museum boasts about 700 cherry trees. From this elevated vantage point, visitors can enjoy a breathtaking panoramic view of the Yamagata Basin and the majestic mountain ranges, including Mt. Zao, Mt. Gassan, and the Asahi Mountains. It is a perfect space to feel one with nature.
The park has been developed as a place of relaxation that utilizes the region's natural beauty. The culture of appreciating seasonal flowers, particularly azaleas and cherry blossoms, is deeply rooted here. The vibrant colors of the azalea garden are a major highlight during this period. Please note that facilities such as the athletics stadium are available for use from April 1st to November 30th.
Sagae Park is an ideal environment for relaxation and physical activity. The park includes an athletics stadium (300-meter track, 6 lanes) where visitors can engage in sports or training. Walking through the vast grounds while gazing at seasonal flowers and distant mountains offers a refreshing escape from daily life. Depending on the season, special events like the Azalea Festival may also be held.
The area surrounding the park is rich in natural scenery. It offers good access to mountainous regions like Zao, Gassan, and the Asahi Mountains, making it an excellent stop on a larger Yamagata sightseeing route. The scenic views of the Yamagata Basin can be enjoyed from various points in the surrounding area as well.
Please choose clothing appropriate for the season. Since you will be walking extensively through the Azalea Garden and Sakura no Oka, comfortable walking shoes and attire are highly recommended. If you wish to use the park's facilities (such as the athletics stadium), you must submit a formal application to the Municipal Gymnasium in advance. Please respect the park rules and help preserve the natural environment.
