Oze Ukai is a traditional cormorant fishing demonstration held on the Nagara River in Seki City, Gifu Prefecture. The scene is truly magical: the deep black of the night, the flickering red light of the bonfire (kagari-bi) reflecting on the water, and the rhythmic calls of the master fisherman (Ukai-shi) as they direct the cormorants to catch fish. This creates a world reminiscent of a classical Japanese picture scroll. With a history spanning over 1,000 years, the traditional methods are strictly preserved, offering a unique landscape where nature, humans, and birds coexist in harmony.
The history of cormorant fishing in this region is incredibly ancient, with records dating back to the Nara period. Historically, this fishing method enjoyed patronage from the Imperial Court and powerful figures; some even suggest a connection to the famous warlord Oda Nobunaga. Today, the skills are passed down through generations of master fishermen who preserve the integrity of the craft. The clear waters of the Nagara River, the sweetfish (ayu), and the art of Ukai remain vital symbols of the local culture.
The greatest highlight is the 'Kari-kudari' (hunting descent), where the fishing boat and viewing boats move together down the river. You can observe the cormorants diving into the water one after another in response to the master's rhythmic calls. Depending on the river's flow and water levels, 'Tsukemise' (stationary viewing) may also be held, allowing spectators to feel the dynamic energy of the river from a fixed position.
