Isuzu Limestone Cave is a captivating limestone cave located in Tamura City, Fukushima Prefecture. The cave was formed by water from the Kissa River on the southwestern slope of Mount Otone flowing into the underground. The cave features three distinct courses: A, B, and C. Each course offers a different level of intensity depending on the distance traveled, water depth, water temperature, and the availability of lighting. This variety allows for a highly customized adventure experience.

Historical and Cultural Background

Isuzu Limestone Cave was discovered on August 25, 1927. It was formerly known as "Takine Fudo Cave." The region is characterized by the "Sendai Plain," a typical karst topography where the landscape has been shaped by the erosion and weathering of limestone. The cave is a vital part of the "Abukuma Cave System," formed by the water flow originating from the southern part of Mount Otone.

Main Highlights

The cave follows a single-path structure that branches into different courses based on how far you proceed. Course A goes approximately 150m from the entrance, Course B goes about 600m, and Course C extends to 900m. From Course B onwards, lighting becomes scarce and the water temperature drops to around 10°C, making proper preparation essential. Depending on the course, water depth can reach up to the knees of an adult male.

Isuzu Limestone Cave is highly sensitive to weather conditions. Following heavy rain, water levels inside the cave can rise significantly, which may lead to temporary closures for safety. Depending on the season, even Course A may experience higher water levels, causing visitors to wade through water up to their knees. It is highly recommended to visit during periods of stable weather.

Experiences and Activities

Visitors can enjoy different levels of exploration through the various courses. While Course A can be enjoyed in regular clothing, Courses B and C require preparation for getting wet. For Course B, it is highly recommended to bring a headlamp, a waterproof hand light, a change of clothes, and extra warmth. Course C is strictly by reservation and must be explored with a professional guide.

The area surrounding Isuzu Limestone Cave features several other notable sites, such as Abukuma Cave, Hoshi no Mura Observatory, and Fureai-kan. These facilities are all part of the geological area shaped by the same water source.

What to Bring, Clothing, and Etiquette

Please prepare appropriately for the cave environment:

• Payment: Cash is the primary method of payment. Please consider purchasing rental items at the sales counter.
• Language Support: While there are information signs, detailed English guidance from staff may be limited.
• Reservations: Courses A and B do not require a reservation, but Course C is strictly by reservation only.
• Clothing: Course A is suitable for regular clothing, but for Courses B and C, we recommend bringing a change of clothes, T-shirts, shorts, and sandals (or water-resistant shoes). Please note that rubber boots are not recommended as they become heavy when filled with water.
• Photography: Please follow the local instructions regarding photography inside the cave.
• Essential Items: For Course B and above, a headlamp or waterproof hand light is highly recommended. These are available for rent or purchase at the counter.
• Accessibility: Due to the water currents and uneven terrain, the cave is not suitable for wheelchair users.
