Mount Moiwa is a 531-meter peak located southwest of central Sapporo. Situated approximately 6 km from Sapporo Station, it is easily accessible from the city center. The summit features an observation deck that provides a vast panoramic view stretching from the Ishikari Plain to the Ishikari Bay. The night view is particularly famous, recognized as one of the 'Three Great Night Views of Hokkaido' and officially certified as one of Japan's 'Top 100 Night Views.' The site is well-equipped with a ropeway and a mini cable car, allowing visitors to enjoy both natural beauty and urban landscapes simultaneously.
The history of Mount Moiwa's tourism development dates back to the 1950s. Since 1957, efforts were made to develop the ropeway and mountain roads to promote local tourism. In July 1958, a road leading from Kitanosawa to the summit was opened. In the past, the foot of the mountain was home to 'Moiwa Dreamland,' an amusement park featuring roller coasters and Ferris wheels, which closed in 1977. Additionally, due to its 531-meter elevation, May 31st is celebrated as 'Moiwa-san Day,' a local tradition involving community-related events.
The greatest attraction is the view from the summit observation deck. You can witness the vastness of the Ishikari Plain and the distant coastline of Ishikari Bay. At night, the lights of Sapporo create a spectacular display. The journey to the top is a unique experience involving a transfer between the ropeway and the 'Moris Car,' a Swiss-made mini cable car (inclined elevator) that travels about 230 meters from the mid-station to the summit. The changing seasonal scenery also adds to the mountain's charm.
Mount Moiwa offers different expressions depending on the season. During the summer season (April–November), it operates from 10:30 to 22:00, and during the winter season (December–March), from 11:00 to 22:00. The twilight hours are particularly beautiful, as you can watch the colors shift during sunset. Please note that operating hours may be extended during Golden Week or on weekends/holidays in August. Since visibility and weather can affect the view, it is recommended to check the weather conditions in advance.
There are two main ways to reach the summit: using the developed facilities or following natural hiking trails. The ropeway and mini cable car provide a smooth and easy ascent to the high altitude. For those seeking nature, there are five hiking courses designed for nature study. Near the summit, visitors can observe seasonal natural environments while enjoying the view. Additionally, the Sapporo Moiwa Ski Resort is located southeast of the summit, providing a winter sports environment during the snowy season.
The area surrounding Mount Moiwa is part of the greater Sapporo metropolitan area. For access, you can reach the 'Ropeway Entrance' stop via the Sapporo Streetcar (tram) and then walk or take a shuttle bus. The 'Moiwa Mountain Sightseeing Road' also allows for easy access by car. The foot of the mountain features areas with rich natural scenery and historical significance, serving as a key part of the Sappoch sightseeing route.
Access to the summit is via ropeway and mini cable car. Because of the elevation, please dress according to the season; especially at night or during winter, temperatures drop significantly, so heavy clothing is highly recommended. Payments for the ropeway can be made via cash, credit cards, or transit IC cards. English signage and staff assistance are available. During peak times, there may be waiting times for the mini cable car, and please note that guests with restaurant reservations may be given priority.
