Michinoku Ajisai Garden is one of Japan's largest hydrangea gardens, nestled within a beautiful cedar forest in Ichinoseki City, Iwate Prefecture. The vast area, spanning more than three times the size of Tokyo Dome, is home to approximately 50,000 hydrangea plants across 400 varieties. Visitors can enjoy a diverse collection including mountain hydrangeas, hydrangea shrubs, Ezo hydrangeas, and Western varieties. The sight of these diverse colors blooming together in a natural forest setting is truly spectacular.
The garden is a privately managed estate by the Ito family, focusing on the cultivation and display of hydrangeas within a rich natural environment. Every year, the area celebrates the 'Michinoku Ajisai Festival' during the peak blooming season, making it a significant local event that draws many visitors to the region to celebrate the arrival of early summer.
The garden features three distinct walking courses designed to suit different terrains and fitness levels: the 'Kurenai Course,' the 'Oku-hime Course,' and the 'Kenkyo (Sturdy) Course.' Each offers a unique perspective of the landscape. Additionally, during the peak exhibition period, you can witness the breathtaking sight of colorful hydrangeas floating on the 'Ajisai Pond,' creating a stunning contrast between the water and the flowers.
The typical blooming season is from late June to late July. For the 2026 season, the garden is scheduled to be open from June 27th to July 20th. Opening hours generally start at 7:30 AM or 8:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM. Please note that schedules may change based on the actual blooming status, so it is highly recommended to check the status before your visit. The peak beauty occurs from late June to early July when the most varieties are in full bloom.
Visitors can enjoy a peaceful stroll through the natural forest paths. For those who prefer a more relaxed experience, a guided cart service is available (additional fee and reservation preferred). There are only 6 carts available, each accommodating 3 to 4 passengers for approximately a 40-minute tour. Please note that pets are not allowed on the carts.
Located in the Ichinoseki and Hiraizumi area, the garden is easily accessible from Ichinoseki Station. A common route involves taking a bus to the 'Mizukami' stop and then walking or using a shuttle service. The surrounding area is rich in natural scenery and historical landmarks.
As the garden is located on mountain paths with unpaved sections, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable, sturdy walking shoes. Waterproof footwear is also advisable during the rainy season. For accessibility, a wheelchair-accessible restroom is located near the entrance. If you wish to use the sightseeing cart, please make a reservation by phone in advance. If you are visiting with a dog, please keep them on a short leash at all times.
