Kobe Nunobiki Herb Gardens is an authentic mountain resort located in the Kitano area of Kobe, Hyogo Prefecture. The journey itself is part of the attraction, as you ascend to the summit via a scenic ropeway from Shin-Kobe Station. The gardens feature a diverse variety of herbs, such as lavender and chamomile, allowing visitors to enjoy shifting colors and scents throughout the seasons. The facility opened in 1991, developed as a botanical garden that leverages the rich natural environment alongside the launch of the Shin-Kobe Ropeway. Over the years, through changes in management, it has evolved into a beloved landmark. It continues to host various seasonal events synchronized with plant growth, maintaining its status as a representative tourist spot in Kobe that celebrates the harmony between nature and leisure.
The garden is divided into several distinct areas, each with its own unique charm. You can explore the Lavender Garden, Blue Garden, and Wildflower Garden, where different flora blooms depending on the season. One of the most breathtaking features is the ability to stroll through paths with varying elevations while simultaneously gazing at both the city and the sea. The layout, which includes greenhouse areas and paths near waterfalls, allows visitors to feel the richness of nature at every turn.
Timing your visit is key to experiencing the best of the gardens. For instance, chamomile is a highlight from April to May, while lavender season peaks from June to July. In the later months, you can enjoy rosemary festivals in September and October, or sage in late autumn. During certain periods, such as the summer or Christmas seasons, the garden offers night operations, allowing you to experience a magical, illuminated atmosphere that differs significantly from the daytime experience.
The main activity is a leisurely stroll to feel the changing seasons. We highly recommend bringing a light jacket or wrap, especially in the evenings or during transitional seasons. Because the paths include slopes and stairs, comfortable walking shoes are essential.
