Kiyotsu Gorge is a magnificent canyon formed by the Kiyotsu River, spanning the towns of Tokamachi and Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture. Recognized as one of Japan's three great canyons, it is also designated as a national scenic spot and natural monument. The most striking feature is the approximately 750-meter-long "Kiyotsu Gorge Valley Tunnel." This tunnel was renovated as an art piece by the Chinese architectural group "MAD Architects (Ma Yansong)" during the Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale in 2018. It creates a truly unique space where the raw beauty of nature and modern architectural elegance coexist.
The formation of Kiyotsu Gorge is a testament to grand geological history. The landscape features geological layers formed by volcanic activity approximately 15 million years ago, with magma intrusion roughly 7 million years ago creating the unique "columnar jointing" seen in the rock faces. Over time, the erosion by the Kiyotsu River carved the deep, beautiful canyon seen today. Historically, the area has been cherished alongside hot spring culture, with Koide Onsen having opened in 1801. The name "Kiyotsu Gorge" was officially established in 1934, recognizing its immense academic and scenic value.
The interior of the Kiyotsu Gorge Valley Tunnel is the primary attraction. Near the exit of the tunnel, there is a "Water Mirror" area where visitors can enjoy reflections on the water's surface. The interplay of light and the surrounding rock walls creates an illusion of infinite space. The tunnel's structure itself is a work of art, designed with the elements of "wood, earth, metal, fire, and water" in mind. The changing expressions of the gorge throughout the seasons offer a different sense of wonder every time you visit.
Kiyotsu Gorge presents a completely different face depending on the season. You can enjoy lush greenery in early May, vibrant autumn colors from late October to early November, and a serene snowy landscape from late December to early April. The autumn foliage and winter snowscapes are particularly popular, so we recommend checking local conditions before visiting. Please note that during the winter season, the site may be closed due to heavy snowfall.
Walking through the tunnel to witness the fusion of nature and art is an experience unique to Kiyotsu Gorge. At the entrance facility, you can relax at the footbath (note: the footbath is closed during winter), visit the cafe, or browse local goods. The area surrounding the gorge is rich in natural beauty and hot spring culture. The nearby "Kiyotsu Koiden Onsen" allows you to enjoy a relaxing soak after your sightseeing. Routes toward the Yuzawa area also feature ropeways and trekking courses, offering plenty of outdoor activities. While driving is very convenient, you can also enjoy the scenery via public transportation while exploring the surrounding region.
Since the ground near the Water Mirror area may be wet, we recommend bringing a small towel. Temperatures can fluctuate significantly depending on the season, so please dress appropriately. Regarding photography, drone filming is strictly prohibited to protect the environment (special application is required). For payments, most transactions at the ticket machines are handled on-site, but please check the official website in advance as some days require advanced reservations.
