The Kitakata City Museum of Art is a cultural landmark located in Kitakata City, Fukushima Prefecture. The building's design is inspired by the traditional 'Kura' (warehouse) architecture that defines the area, featuring a striking brick exterior. Notably, some of the bricks used in the construction were locally produced in Kitakata, deeply rooting the structure in its local heritage. The museum houses a diverse collection of artworks, including paintings, sculptures, crafts, and photography from both Japan and around the world.
The museum holds a significant collection of works by artists with strong ties to Kitakata City and the Aizu region. As a public museum in Fukushima, it has a long-standing tradition of hosting the 'Furusato no Fuukei-ten' (Local Landscape Exhibition), a prestigious open call exhibition. This event serves as a vital platform for artists to showcase works themed around the beautiful local landscapes. The facility is managed by Kitakata Furusato Shinko Co., Ltd.
Visitors can enjoy a wide range of collections, including domestic and international paintings, sculptures, crafts, and photography. A major highlight is the 'Furusato no Fuokei-ten,' which is the only open call exhibition of its kind among public museums in Fukushima Prefecture. The museum is open from 10:00 AM to 6:00 PM. Please note that the last entry to the exhibition rooms is 30 minutes before closing. Since the special exhibitions change seasonally, we highly recommend checking the official website for the latest information before your visit. Please be aware that the museum is closed on Wednesdays.
Beyond viewing the permanent collections, the museum occasionally hosts special events such as figure drawing classes. For admission fees, please note that cash is often required. Visitors holding a physical disability certificate (such as a Disability Certificate, Rehabilitation Certificate, or Mental Disability Certificate) may be eligible for free admission under certain conditions.
