Yoshiki-en is a beautiful Japanese garden managed by Nara Prefecture, located in the heart of Nara City. The garden is composed of three distinct areas, each offering a unique atmosphere: the Pond Garden, the Moss Garden, and the Tea Flower Garden. The landscape is adorned with the former Shohoin Family Residence—a piece of modern Japanese architecture from the Taisho era—and a thatched-roof detached tea room, creating a deeply historical and serene setting. Admission to the garden is free, making it an easy and accessible stop for tourists visiting Nara Park.
The history of this site is profound; it is said to have once been the site of Mani-ju-in, a sub-temple of Kofuku-ji Temple. While it became private property during the Meiji era, the current buildings and garden layout were established in 1919 (the Taisho era). After serving as a guest house for various organizations, it is now owned by Nara Prefecture and open to the public. The former Shohoin Family Residence is a significant piece of history, designated as a Nara Prefectural Tangible Cultural Property in 2011 due to its exquisite Taisho-era modern Japanese architectural style.

Yoshiki-en offers different charms depending on the season. The seasonal flowers in the Tea Flower Garden and the vibrant greenery of the Moss Garden provide a changing canvas of beauty. Visiting during the bright daylight hours allows you to clearly see the intricate details of the architecture and the colors of the garden. Visiting near dusk offers a deeper sense of tranquility and silence. Please note that the garden is closed from February 24th to February 28th each year.
The garden features a detached tea room where visitors can experience the authentic culture of the Japanese tea ceremony. Using the tea room requires a fee and is suitable for tea ceremonies or special gatherings. The facility also offers services such as the free lending of items like felt mats (mosen) and pots. It is a perfect place to escape the bustle of daily life and immerse yourself in traditional Japanese tea culture.
Located within the Nara Park area, which includes several World Heritage sites, Yoshiki-en is surrounded by history. Nearby attractions like Isuien Garden and the former residence of Taikichi Irie are within walking distance, allowing for a deeper exploration of Nara's historical landscape. You will also be close to the famous deer of Nara Park.
While the garden paths are well-maintained, the terrain follows natural contours, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended.
