Kirishima Art no Mori is a contemporary open-air museum located on the slopes of Mount Kurino in northern Kagoshima Prefecture, at an altitude of 700 meters. Opened in October 2000, its greatest feature is the collection of original works by Japanese and international artists, specifically designed to harmonize with the natural landscape of Kirishima. The vast grounds include a wide lawn area, forest zones, and the 'Art Hall,' an indoor exhibition facility, allowing visitors to experience contemporary art while immersed in nature.
This facility was established as a hub for artistic exchange in Kagoshima Prefecture. The works on display are original pieces conceived by artists from Japan and abroad who deeply understood the local nature, history, and culture, creating art that is rooted in the local environment. Rather than being a simple exhibition space, it serves as a center for cultural exchange, helping to communicate the depth and fascination of contemporary art to a wider audience.
The park features more than 20 permanent outdoor works by domestic and international artists. Most pieces are installed to integrate seamlessly with the natural topography and vegetation, offering a different expression with every season. For instance, you can experience different visual perspectives depending on the location—whether it is a piece set in the expansive lawn or a sculpture nestled within the natural forest. Additionally, the 'Art Hall' hosts various collection exhibitions and special themed exhibitions using diverse materials, bringing the diversity of contemporary art closer to the public.
Kirishima Art no Mori is a destination where you can enjoy changing scenery throughout the seasons. From spring to summer, it is an ideal spot to stroll through the vast lawns under a clear blue sky while admiring brightly colored artworks. Notably, from July 20th to August 31st, the museum extends its opening hours until 19:00 on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. This allows you to witness the changing expressions of the art under the soft light of dusk. Please note that the final entry is 30 minutes before closing time, so please plan your visit accordingly.
Visitors can observe and even touch many of the artworks up close. Many of the outdoor pieces are designed to be tactile, providing a sensory experience that goes beyond sight to include touch. The Art Hall also hosts various events, such as workshops for children, creative activities, and lectures, making it an environment where people of all ages can enjoy art. Through walking in nature, you can enjoy a truly relaxing and rejuvenating time.
The facility is located approximately 35 minutes by car from Kagoshima Airport, making it an excellent destination for a scenic drive. The surrounding area is characterized by the natural beauty of the Kirishima mountain range, and historic sites like Kirishima Shrine are also located nearby. If you are using public transportation, there is a route involving a community bus from Kurino Station on the JR Hisatsu Line.
As the park covers a vast area and focuses on outdoor exploration, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please prepare clothing suitable for the season. Cashless payments are accepted at the facility. Regarding etiquette, please respect the artworks and follow the posted guidelines during your visit.
