Memorial Ship Mikasa is a preserved battleship of the Imperial Japanese Navy, located within Mikasa Park in Yokosuka, Kanagawa Prefecture. This site has been selected as one of the '100 Best Urban Parks in Japan' and '100 Best Historical Parks in Japan,' offering both profound historical value and breathtaking scenery. The park features a musical fountain and beautifully illuminated areas, allowing visitors to not only learn about history but also relax in a peaceful seaside atmosphere.
The battleship 'Mikasa' played a pivotal role in Japanese history. Today, it is preserved and open to the public as a memorial ship, showcasing the naval technology and design of its era. Mikasa Park serves as more than just a recreational space; it is a vital site for preserving and passing down historical heritage to future generations. The surrounding area is deeply connected to naval history, preserving the cultural legacy of the region alongside its scenic landscapes.
The greatest attraction is the opportunity to step inside the ship and observe the actual layout and equipment used during its service. Inside, a video introduction to the Mikasa is played repeatedly to deepen your understanding of the vessel. The park also features a bronze statue of Admiral Tōgō Heihachirō, a 18-meter monument, and a musical fountain that dances to music. At night, the area is illuminated, offering a completely different and enchanting atmosphere compared to the daytime.
Viewing hours vary depending on the season, so checking in advance is highly recommended. From April to September, the park is open until 17:30; in March and October, until 17:00; and from November to February, until 16:30. During the summer months, you can enjoy special performances such as the musical fountain show, which occurs seven times a day. The evening illuminations are particularly recommended for a romantic or contemplative experience by the sea.
During the ship tour, you can examine the structural details and weaponry of the era. In the park, you can enjoy the musical fountain shows or simply relax on the lawn. Mikasa Park is themed around 'Water, Light, and Sound,' providing a harmonious and soothing experience. Watching the educational videos inside the ship also provides a much deeper insight into the historical context of the vessel.
Mikasa Park faces Yokosuka Shinko and is surrounded by facilities that reflect the naval history of Yokosuka. Additionally, boats to Sarushima Island depart from the nearby Mikasa Pier, providing easy access to the surrounding islands. The park is conveniently located about a 15-minute walk from Yokosuka-Chuo Station and a 30-minute walk from Yokosuka Station.
Comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended for exploring the ship's interior and the park grounds. Please note that proof of age or disability may be required for certain entry procedures. Children in elementary school (3rd grade and below) must be accompanied by a guardian at all times. Please respect public manners while enjoying the musical fountain shows and evening illuminations.
