Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan is a municipal museum located in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. It opened on September 28, 2003, to preserve and exhibit materials related to the Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri, which is designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property. The building itself features the 'Kurazukuri' architectural style, a traditional design characteristic of Kawagoe. Inside, visitors can learn about the passion, history, and preparation behind the Kawagoe Matsuri, which boasts a history of approximately 370 years.
The Kawagoe Matsuri is celebrated as one of the three great festivals of the Kanto region. This facility was established to pass this precious tradition down to future generations. Through its exhibits, visitors can explore the evolution of the festival and the cultural background of essential elements such as 'Kikari' (chanting), 'Hayashi' (traditional music), and the meticulous preparations involved. The museum also serves as a cultural hub, showcasing the Edo-period culture that continues to define the identity of the Kawagoe region.
The most striking exhibit is the collection of authentic festival floats (Dashi) used in actual parades. Two massive floats are displayed on rotation, allowing you to observe their heavy, intricate craftsmanship up close. The absolute highlight is the large-scale 3-screen video presentation (4.7m x 8.7m). This 8-minute immersive video captures the intense energy of the festival day, making you feel as if you are standing right in the center of the crowd. Additionally, you can view displays of traditional costumes and learn about the musical performances that accompany the festivities.
The museum is open year-round, but closing times vary by season. From April to September, it closes at 6:30 PM, and from October to March, it closes at 5:30 PM. A special highlight occurs on Sundays and holidays, when live 'Hayashi' (traditional music) performances are held twice a day—at 1:30 PM and 2:30 PM—allowing visitors to experience the rhythmic atmosphere of the festival through live sound.
The facility features a high-tech exhibition experience. Beyond the immersive 3-screen video, the museum uses digital technology to provide a multi-faceted understanding of the festival through archival footage and interviews with local participants. To ensure a smooth experience for international visitors, an audio guide system has been introduced to provide deeper context and explanations in multiple languages.
Kawagoe Matsuri Kaikan is located in a vibrant area filled with famous sightseeing spots. Within walking distance, you can visit the iconic 'Toki no Kane' (Bell of Time), the 'Kashiya Yokocho' (Candy Alley) for street food, and the beautiful 'Kurazukuri' streetscapes. It is also near other cultural landmarks like the Kawagoe City Museum, Kawagoe City Art Museum, and the Kawagoe City Honmaru Palace, making it an ideal starting point for a cultural tour of Kawagoe.
