Kashihara Jingu is a highly prestigious shrine located in Kashihara City, Nara Prefecture. It enshrines the first Emperor of Japan, Emperor Jimmu, and his consort, Empress Keiko. The shrine's unique history began when Emperor Meiji requested the transfer of the Kashikodokoro (Sacred Hall) and Shinkaden from the former Kyoto Imperial Palace. As a result, the grounds are adorned with magnificent structures that preserve the elegant architectural styles of the Kyoto Imperial Court. The vast precinct features dedicated halls for ceremonies and various historical buildings, making it a significant site that symbolizes the dawn of Japanese history.
The history of this shrine dates back to 1890 (Meiji 23). It was established through the petition of private citizens to honor the virtues of Emperor Jimmu, with the Emperor providing architectural elements from the Kyoto Imperial Palace. This act held great significance in reaffirming ancient Japanese history during the era of modernization. The shrine continues to embody the evolution of Japan from the time of Emperor Jimmu's ascension to the present day. The center of the shrine consists of a series of ritual halls, including the Honden (Main Hall), Tokiwaden, Gaihaiden, and Naihaiden. The architecture is particularly striking for its 'Karahafu'—curved gables that add a sense of elegance. The Shamusho (Shrine Office) also features a historic design with traditional tiled and copper roofs. Other notable structures include the Gishikiden (Ceremonial Hall), Kagura-den (Sacred Dance Hall), and the Naihaiden, which serves as the site for formal worship led by priests. The wide approach, majestic Torii gates, and beautifully maintained gardens and ponds form a breathtaking landscape.
Kashihara Jingu reveals different faces throughout the seasons. April, May, October, and November are ideal times to visit, as the weather is stable and the colors of the greenery and architecture are most vibrant. The harmony between nature and the historic buildings is especially beautiful during these transitional periods. Visiting in the early morning is highly recommended to experience the sacred atmosphere and observe the intricate architectural details in the quiet air. This includes 'Formal Worship' (Seishiki Sanpai) led by a Shinto priest and 'Gaikunai Sanpai' available for same-day registration.
