Jomyoji is a Zen temple of the Kencho-ji school located in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture. As the fifth-ranked temple in the Kamakura Gozan (Five Mountains) system, it holds significant historical importance, particularly regarding its ties to the Ashikaga clan. The temple grounds are home to precious architectural structures and gardens designated as national historical sites and Kanagawa Prefecture's historical landscape preservation areas. Depending on when you visit, the scenery changes beautifully: from the blooming peonies in spring and plum blossoms in winter to the vibrant autumn colors and the serene dry landscape garden surrounding the Kisen-an tea house.
The temple's origins date back to 1184, founded by Yoshikane Ashikaga, a high-ranking official under Minamoto no Yoritomo. The site is deeply intertwined with the history of the Ashikaga clan and figures such as Hojo Masako and Minamoto no Sanetomo. Within the grounds, you can find the Hogyoin Tower, believed to be the tomb of Sadauji Ashikaga, which serves as a testament to the warrior culture of the Kamakura period. The area is also rich in local lore, including the legends surrounding the name 'Inagiri' (harvest cutting).
A major highlight is the main hall (Hondo) with its heavy, traditional architecture. The structures around the main hall utilize materials from the Muromachi period, allowing visitors to observe authentic ancient architectural styles. Behind the main hall, the Hogyoin Tower offers a profound sense of historical depth. Additionally, the grounds feature diverse historical spots, such as Inari-yama, associated with Fujiwara no Kamatari, and the site of a former Western-style mansion. The seasonal shifts in vegetation provide a constantly changing backdrop for exploration.
The temple's colors change with the seasons: peonies in spring, plum blossoms in winter, and brilliant autumn leaves in the fall. These periods offer the most spectacular natural displays. During the day, the grounds are ideal for a peaceful stroll or a relaxing matcha experience at the tea house. For a unique experience, there is a restaurant located near the edge of the grounds that utilizes a former Western-style building, allowing you to enjoy a meal surrounded by nature.
At the Kisen-an tea house located on the premises, you can enjoy matcha accompanied by seasonal Japanese sweets. This is a wonderful opportunity to experience the traditional Japanese tea ceremony culture. The menu includes Matcha with dry sweets (660 JPY) or Matcha with fresh seasonal sweets (1,100 JPY) (prices exclude tax). While individual visits are welcome without a reservation, groups of 10 or more are required to book in advance. It is a perfect way to spend a quiet moment while gazing at the garden.
The area surrounding Jomyoji is known as the Nyokaido/Jomyoji district, a neighborhood that preserves the historic atmosphere of Kamakura. Nearby, you will find various historic temples and scenic walking paths. The adjacent 'Ishikama Garden Terrace' offers a unique dining experience in an English-style garden setting. The temple is easily accessible by bus from Kamakura Station, making it easy to combine with other local sightseeing spots.
Please observe temple rules during your visit. Cash is generally required for admission fees and tea house experiences. When visiting the tea house, it is helpful to confirm the price beforehand. Since you will be walking through the temple grounds, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. While photography is generally permitted, please respect restrictions regarding the interior of certain buildings and Buddhist statues. Public restrooms are available on the premises.
