Hoheikyo Dam is a vital multi-purpose dam responsible for water supply, flood control, and power generation for the Sapporo area. Surrounded by deep forests and rugged mountains, the landscape—where the clear blue reservoir meets massive concrete structures—is a magnificent display of harmony between nature and man-made engineering. It has been selected as one of the '100 Best Water Source Forests' and '100 Best Dam Lakes' by the Forestry Agency, making it a premier spot to experience the authentic natural beauty of Hokkaido.
Construction of the dam began in 1967 and was completed in October 1972. Beyond its role in preventing floods and generating electricity using the Toyohira River, it serves as a critical infrastructure supporting the water needs of Sapporo. The local history is also deeply connected to the Ainu culture, with the name of the area being linked to the term 'Sapporo-petsu,' meaning 'the large dry river' in the Ainu language, reflecting the historical natural environment of the region.
One of the most exhilarating experiences is the 'Sightseeing Water Discharge.' Conducted from April to October, this event allows visitors to witness the sheer power of water being released from the dam at close range. The striking color contrast between the blue water of the reservoir and the surrounding greenery is a photographer's dream. From the dam crest and surrounding walking paths, you can observe the massive scale of the structure and feel truly overwhelmed by its grandeur.
Hoheikyo Dam offers a different face to every season. In spring, you can witness the melting snows flowing into the reservoir; in summer, the landscape is enveloped in deep, lush greenery. Autumn brings a spectacular display of vibrant foliage that blends seamlessly with the dam's scenery. Since the water discharge occurs between April and October, visiting during these months ensures you can enjoy the most dynamic water displays. We recommend checking the electric bus schedules and water discharge times before your visit.
Visitors can enjoy a scenic ride on an electric bus to experience the surrounding nature. While the distance from the parking lot to the dam site is approximately 2km (about a 20–30 minute walk), the electric bus makes the journey smooth and easy in just about 7–8 minutes. Depending on the season, a lift car may also be operational, offering elevated views of the area. Additionally, don't forget to visit the Dam Information Center to see exhibits and collect a unique 'Dam Card' available only here.
Located near the dam is the famous 'Hoheikyo Onsen,' a hot spring surrounded by rich nature. After exploring the dam, you can unwind with a soak and enjoy the local specialty: delicious curry. The area also features natural spots like the Kudan Falls, making it an excellent base for nature walks and relaxation.
As the dam is located in a natural environment, comfortable walking shoes and clothing suitable for changing weather are highly recommended. Please note that payments for the electric bus, Dam Cards, or Onsen services are primarily handled in cash. If you are traveling with pets, they must be kept in a cage while riding the bus and must be on a leash within the park. To protect the environment, please take your trash home with you.
