Honraku-ji is a Shingon Buddhism temple located in Mima City, Tokushima Prefecture. The temple's landscape is uniquely characterized by the guidance of Chuichi Saito, a disciple of the renowned Japanese garden designer Mineko Shigemori. The most striking feature is the exquisite Karesansui (dry landscape) garden, which utilizes the technique of 'shakkei' (borrowed scenery) to incorporate the beautiful Yoshino River into its design. The architecture and gardens are perfectly integrated with the natural topography, offering a space where visitors can feel a profound sense of harmony with nature and find true serenity.
With a history dating back to the Heian period, Honraku-ji has weathered many eras, including wars and fires. While many of the current structures were rebuilt or renovated in the Heisei era, the traditional spirit of the land remains intact. The presiding priest operates under the philosophy of "contributing to spiritual happiness and cultural improvement," aiming to bring joy to people through the beauty of gardens and cuisine. The temple continues to evolve while honoring tradition, with structures like the Amida-do (built in 1990) and Goma-do (built in 2009), and the planned construction of the Bell Tower in 2024.
Visitors will encounter a seamless fusion of nature and architecture. Upon passing through the Sanmon (gate), the Karesansui garden immediately captures the eye, using artificial hedges to frame the distant mountains and the flowing Yoshino River, creating a high level of artistic depth. The 'Kake-zukuri' (overhanging) architectural style is another highlight; buildings such as the Amida-do and Tenjin-sha are built along the natural slopes, offering a unique structural beauty. Furthermore, the stroll-style Japanese garden in the rear allows visitors to experience the delicate balance between human-made design and natural landscape.

Located along the Yoshino River in Mima City, the temple is part of a rich cultural route. Nearby, you can explore the historic streets of Wakamachi (Udatsu Townscape), where traditional architecture is well-preserved. When traveling to the area via Route 192 or the Tokushima Expressway, please be aware that some local roads can be narrow.
As this is a sacred Buddhist site, please act with respect. We recommend wearing modest clothing and bringing socks, as you will often be asked to remove your shoes when entering the temple halls. Please note that most payments (tea, sutra copying, and meals) are strictly cash-only. If you wish to enjoy the vegetarian meals, advanced reservations are mandatory.
