Hirayu Otaki Falls is a magnificent waterfall located in the Okuhida Onsen Village of Takayama City, Gifu Prefecture. Standing 64 meters high and approximately 6 meters wide, it is celebrated as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls and is a quintessential natural landmark of the Hida region. The area is surrounded by rich, untouched nature that offers a completely different face in every season. In summer and autumn, visitors can enjoy the refreshing sound of rushing water against lush greenery, while in winter, the waterfall transforms into a breathtaking frozen icefall, creating a magical atmosphere.
The area is steeped in local legend involving a Sengoku-period warlord. It is said that during a military campaign in the Hida region, the troops of Yamagata Masakage (a vassal of Takeda Shingen) were weakened by exhaustion and sulfurous gases from Mount Yodogake. A white monkey appeared and guided them to a hot spring, which helped them recover. This legend is considered one of the origins of the nearby Hirayu Onsen, deeply linking the natural beauty of the waterfall with the historical heritage of the region.
The greatest draw is the powerful, vertical stream of water that commands attention. The visual landscape changes dramatically with the seasons, offering a unique spectacle every time you visit. A particularly spectacular sight occurs in February during the 'Hirayu Otaki Icefall Festival.' During this time, the waterfall freezes into a massive, crystalline ice structure, and nighttime illuminations turn the frozen falls into a dreamlike, glowing masterpiece of light and ice.
While the waterfall can be enjoyed year-round, certain seasons offer unique experiences. From spring to autumn, the vibrant colors of the changing foliage and the lush greenery make for a refreshing sight. For those seeking a truly mystical experience, the winter season (specifically February) is highly recommended to witness the nighttime light-up events, where the illuminated ice creates a surreal and unforgettable scenery unlike any other time of year.
The area around the falls is developed as Hirayu Otaki Park, providing well-maintained paths for nature walks. There is a scenic walking trail of approximately 0.7 km from the parking area to the waterfall, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the sounds of nature. During the winter festival, the combination of the illuminated icefall and fireworks creates a special, high-impact event. The surrounding area is perfect for a slow-paced stroll to enjoy the crisp mountain air.
The falls are located within the famous Okuhida Onsen Village, a premier hot spring destination. Nearby attractions include Hirayu Onsen, Hirayu Campground, and the Hirayu Bus Terminal, making it a very convenient base for sightseeing. As part of the Chubu Sangaku National Park, the area offers stunning views of the Northern Alps. After visiting the falls, many travelers enjoy relaxing in a nearby footbath or hot spring facility to unwind.
As this is a natural environment, preparation according to the season is essential. In summer and autumn, comfortable walking shoes are sufficient. However, if visiting in winter, high-quality non-slip shoes (for snow and ice) and heavy winter clothing are absolutely mandatory for safety.
