Higashi Shiioya Falls is a grand waterfall with a drop of 85 meters, located in Ajimu Town, Usa City, Oita Prefecture. Due to its beauty resembling the famous Kegon Falls in Nikko, it is nicknamed the 'Kegon of Kyushu' and is officially selected as one of Japan's Top 100 Waterfalls. The sight of water rushing down the sheer vertical cliffs is overwhelming, filling the air with refreshing negative ions. The scenery of the valley leading to the basin is exceptionally beautiful, making this one of the most prominent scenic spots in Kyushu where you can feel the raw energy of nature directly.
Since ancient times, this waterfall has been revered as a sacred site for Kannon worship. The combination of the powerful water descending the cliffs and the serene natural environment has inspired a sense of awe and reverence toward nature for generations. Today, it is preserved not only as a popular tourist destination for its aesthetic beauty but also as a precious natural resource for the local community.
The absolute highlight is the sight of the water plummeting straight down the vertical cliff. The overwhelming scale of the 85-meter drop is a sight to behold. Additionally, the scenic valley and clear streams are not to be missed. The landscape changes with every season: the fresh greenery of spring, the refreshing sounds of water in summer, the vibrant colors of autumn, and the quiet stillness of winter. Each season offers a different sense of wonder. The points along the walking paths where you can feel the power of the falls up close are also a major attraction.
Higashi Shiioya Falls shows a completely different face depending on the season. The most recommended times are spring for the dazzling fresh greenery, summer for the cool sensation of abundant water, and autumn for the colorful foliage that blankets the entire valley. Visiting during the daytime when sunlight hits the falls is particularly beautiful, as the water droplets sparkle brilliantly. However, please note that access may be restricted during heavy rain or when river levels rise; it is ideal to check the weather before visiting.
Here, you can experience a 'healing time' by listening to the sounds of nature and breathing in the abundant negative ions. Watching the powerful waterfall up close while forgetting the hustle and bustle of daily life is a true luxury. You can also enjoy a relaxing stroll along the surrounding paths, engaging all your senses to enjoy the changing seasons and the beauty of the mountain stream.
The area around Higashi Shiioya Falls is dotted with spots where you can fully enjoy the rich nature of Usa City. For nature lovers, nearby sites such as Nishi Shiioya Falls and Fukukino Falls (both part of the 'Usa San-taki' trio) are highly recommended. You can also incorporate a visit to the historic Usa Jingu Shrine into your travel plan, creating a perfect itinerary that combines history and nature.
As this is a natural site, we strongly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes (sneakers or trekking shoes). Be especially careful on the paths, as surfaces can be slippery when wet. Since this is a protected natural area, please follow local etiquette by taking all your trash home and avoiding any actions that might damage the environment.
