Hase-dera Temple (Iiyama Kannon) is a temple of the Koyasan Shingon sect located in Atsugi, Kanagawa Prefecture. As the 6th site of the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage, it has long been a beloved destination for worshippers. The greatest charm of this temple lies in its rich natural scenery that changes with the seasons. The spring cherry blossoms and early summer hydrangeas are particularly famous, with the temple being selected as one of the top 50 scenic spots in Kanagawa and a top 100 flower viewing site in the prefecture.
The history of this temple is profound, said to have been founded by the monk Goki Bosatsu in 725 AD. Later, in 807 AD, the great monk Kobo Daishi (Kukai) held teachings at this site. The Kannon-do hall, commissioned by Minamoto no Yoritomo through the order of Akita Jokai Yoshikage, enshrines the Eleven-faced Kannon. It also houses a Buddha statue carved by Goki himself. During the Edo period, the temple became a center for both religious pilgrimage and leisure travel, deeply rooting itself in the local community.
The temple grounds are meticulously arranged with seasonal flora. In spring, approximately 3,000 Yoshino and mountain cherry blossoms bloom across the area, including the surrounding Hakusan Nature Park. In early summer, the paths leading to the main hall are beautifully lined with colorful hydrangeas near the Nio-mon Gate. Other seasonal highlights include daffodils and colorful maple leaves. The dignified main hall and the historic architecture of the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage site are also essential to visit.
Visiting during specific seasons is the best way to experience Hase-dera. Spring (March–April) is the season for cherry blossoms, which can be enjoyed alongside the nearby Hakusan Nature Park. Early summer (rainy season) is the peak time for hydrangeas, turning the approach to the temple into a vibrant floral path. In autumn, the colorful maple leaves decorate the grounds. We recommend visiting while checking the specific seasonal blooms to witness the changing landscape.
Visitors can enjoy collecting Goshuin (sacred stamps) at this historic temple. The temple offers unique items such as original Hase-dera Goshuin books and special stamps related to the Bando 33 Kannon pilgrimage. There are three different types of Goshuin designs available. Walking through the temple grounds while observing seasonal plants and visiting the Kannon-do hall offers a peaceful escape from daily life.
Hase-dera is located near Hakusan Nature Park, offering a lush, natural environment. During the spring, the 'Atsugi Iiyama Sakura Festival' is held, drawing many visitors to the area to enjoy the cherry blossoms and the vibrant atmosphere of the surrounding nature.
Please follow temple etiquette during your visit. As some paths may be unpaved or involve slopes, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Cash is required for purchasing Goshuin stamps or amulets. Please check the availability of English signage or staff assistance beforehand. When taking photos, please respect the rules of the temple grounds and maintain a respectful atmosphere.
