Goro Sky Tower is an observation facility located on Mt. Goro in Maizuru City, Kyoto Prefecture. Situated at an altitude of 301.2 meters, it offers a commanding view of the intricate rias coastline and the scattered islands of Maizuru Bay. This location was selected as the #1 spot in the 'Kinki 100 Best Views,' providing a harmonious blend of natural beauty and modern infrastructure. From the observation deck, visitors can even spot ships and naval vessels navigating the sea.
Mt. Goro has long been a cherished natural landmark for the local community. Positioned between Higashi-Maizuru and Nishi-Maizuru, the area holds significant historical landscape value. Today, the modern Goro Sky Tower serves as a vital hub for sharing the maritime beauty of Maizuru with tourists, balancing the preservation of natural scenery with modern tourism development.
The standout feature is the 'Digital Telescope' installed in the observation room. Introduced in May 2024, this equipment features a 10-inch color LCD monitor, allowing for high-magnification observation. This allows families and groups to view distant naval vessels or luxury cruise ships together in vivid detail. The observation deck provides a panoramic view of the unique rias coastline and islands. At night, the area is sometimes illuminated with beam lighting, adding a dramatic layer to the evening scenery.
The scenery changes beautifully with the seasons, but the views during clear days and at sunset are particularly highly rated. On Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays, the facility remains open until 21:00, making it an excellent time to witness the transition from sunset to the night view. Please note that from December to March, operating hours are shortened to 17:00 due to potential snow accumulation. It is highly recommended to check the weather and facility status in advance, as closures may occur due to weather or snow.
In addition to enjoying the view from the deck, you can experience high-magnification observation via the digital telescope. The monitor's autofocus function allows you to track movements on the sea in detail. The facility also houses 'Goro Sky Cafe nanako,' where you can enjoy coffee and light snacks while gazing at the horizon. Taking a moment to relax amidst nature while watching the sea is a quintessential Maizuru experience.
The area around Goro Sky Tower features several spots where you can touch upon the history and culture of Maizuru. For example, Maizuru Red Brick Park and the Maizuru Port Toretore Center are located within a few dozen minutes by car. These are major sightseeing areas where you can explore historical architecture and enjoy fresh seafood. Incorporating these into your driving route will deepen your understanding of Maizuru's charm.
The admission fee for the observation area is 300 JPY for adults and 150 JPY for children. Discounts (half price) are available for holders of various disability certificates (Physical, Intellectual, Mental, War-wounded, or Atomic Bomb survivor certificates) upon presentation at the reception. While some digital telescope payments or cafe purchases may support QR code payments like PayPay, it is best to carry cash or a card. During the winter season (December to March), please bring warm clothing as temperatures drop significantly.
