Fukuroda Falls is one of Japan's most iconic waterfalls, located in Daigo Town, Kuji District, Ibaraki Prefecture. Situated on the upper reaches of the Takigawa River, a tributary of the Kuji River, this magnificent waterfall spans a total length of 120 meters and a width of 73 meters. Its most striking feature is the dynamic movement of water cascading down in four distinct tiers. From a distance, the water appears as a gentle white line, but as you approach, you can feel the immense power of the water striking the ground, a transformation that continues to captivate visitors.
This site has long been a destination for poets and writers who came to praise its sublime beauty. It has a rich history of serving as a subject for various artistic works, ranging from Waka poetry by monk-poets in the Heian period to modern-day poetry. Furthermore, the area holds deep historical significance; records show that successive lords of the Mito Clan once visited this site, highlighting its status as a culturally significant scenic spot where nature and history intertwine.
To enjoy the full view of the falls, visitors walk through the 'Fukuroda Falls Tunnel,' which is 276 meters long and 3 meters high. Beyond this tunnel, the first and second observation decks allow you to witness the powerful waterfall from a very close distance. The second observation deck, in particular, features a three-tier deck structure, designed to provide a panoramic, bird's-eye view of the entire waterfall from an elevated position. Additionally, the nearby Namase Falls offers another way to experience the region's rich natural diversity.
Fukuroda Falls reveals a different face in every season. In spring and summer, the lush greenery surrounding the white water spray creates a refreshing atmosphere. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn vibrant shades of red and yellow, adding brilliant color to the landscape. The contrast between the waterfall and the autumn foliage is particularly stunning. In winter, you may witness the phenomenon of 'ice waterfalls' (hyobaku), where the falls freeze into ice walls, offering a glimpse into the raw power of nature. During certain periods, night-time illuminations are also held, providing a mystical and dreamlike atmosphere different from the daytime.
Using the viewing facilities, you can walk close enough to feel the mist and hear the roaring sound of the water. The view from the high-altitude decks after walking through the tunnel provides an immersive experience that makes you forget daily life. For those seeking more adventure, you can use the hiking course leading toward Mount Tsukoi to view the falls from the upstream side. Walking through this natural environment allows you to feel the energy of the water with your entire body.
The area around the falls is dotted with accommodation facilities surrounded by nature. Within Daigo Town, you can find places such as 'Fukuroda Onsen Omoide Roman-kan,' 'Yukyu no Yado Takimikan,' and 'Kitashinokan Bekkan,' where you can relax while enjoying the serene atmosphere. The surrounding environment is part of the Oku-Kuji Prefectural Natural Park, a region blessed with abundant forest resources.
As the area is a rich natural environment, wearing comfortable walking shoes is highly recommended. Please note that admission fees are required to use the viewing facilities. While elevators are available to reach the upper parts of the second observation deck, please be aware that pet access is restricted at the upper levels of the second deck (though allowed at the first deck). To protect the natural environment, please follow local etiquette and ensure you take all trash home with you.
