Fukuoka City Zoo and Botanical Gardens is a unique facility located within Minami Park in Chuo-ku, Fukuoka City, where a zoo and a botanical garden coexist. The facility is divided into two distinct zones—the Zoo area and the Botanical Garden area—each offering a different dimension of nature experience. It is one of Fukuoka's premier leisure destinations, allowing visitors to enjoy the adorable sight of animals and the seasonal beauty of plants simultaneously.
Historically, a zoo once existed in the area where the current Fukuoka City Mukaichi Elementary School stands. After the war, the zoo was rebuilt in Minami Park, south of central Fukuoka, evolving into its current form. The botanical garden also grew through the use of the former site of the Hirao Water Purification Plant. Today, the facility maintains a rich natural environment where approximately 110 species of animals and 2,600 species of plants live in harmony.

In the Zoo area, you can observe a wide variety of animals in their naturalistic habitats. Meanwhile, the Botanical Garden area offers a chance to enjoy seasonal flowers and lush greenery. A standout feature is the greenhouse, which houses about 1,200 types of plants across eight different environmental zones. Additionally, the observation deck provides a panoramic view of the surrounding landscape, where nature and the urban cityscape blend beautifully.
There is always something new to discover regardless of when you visit. You can enjoy blooming flowers in spring, deep greenery in summer, vibrant autumn leaves, and the serene stillness of plants in winter. April and May are particularly highly recommended as the best seasons to witness the breathtaking beauty of the flora. Daytime visits are ideal for seeing active animals, while the late afternoon offers a peaceful atmosphere in the botanical garden for relaxation.

Visitors can engage in various ways with nature. In the botanical garden, you can observe the seasonal cycles of plants. The facility also features attractions such as a Ferris wheel, a merry-go-round, and small playground equipment, making it an ideal spot for families with children to enjoy an entire day of fun. Experience a luxurious moment of leisure amidst nature.
Located in Minami Park, the facility is easily accessible from central Fukuoka and is surrounded by lush greenery. Near the botanical garden, you can find 'Botanical Life Square,' a facility that promotes urban greening and offers new lifestyle suggestions through plants. The surrounding area is also excellent for a relaxing stroll.
As the grounds are extensive, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. During summer, it is wise to bring insect repellent. In the botanical garden's lawn area, you may use leisure sheets or simple tents (note: pegs/stakes are prohibited) to relax while being mindful of others. Please note that flash photography in the zoo and feeding animals, or breaking plant branches, is strictly prohibited. Please ensure you take all your trash home with you.
