Osagoe Minkaen is an open-air museum located in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. The site features five relocated and restored houses of wealthy farmers and village headmen (Shoya) dating back to around the 18th century. These include not only the main residences but also traditional storehouses (Dozou), ash sheds, and even historical latrines (Kawaya). Inside each building, authentic furniture and daily-use tools are displayed, meticulously recreating the atmosphere of life in old Japan. A major highlight is the ability to freely enter these structures, allowing visitors to experience the scale and texture of historical living spaces firsthand.
The architecture on display represents the residences of influential figures in the Fukui region's social hierarchy. The area is also well-connected to other natural landmarks like Mt. Ashiba, making it a great starting point for exploring Fukui's natural beauty.
As the museum consists of traditional wooden houses, you will encounter uneven floors, dirt floors (doma), and tatami mats. We recommend wearing comfortable, easy-to-remove shoes.
