The Fuji Subaru Line is a spectacular mountain driveway spanning approximately 30km, connecting the Lake Kawaguchi area to the Mt. Fuji 5th Station at an altitude of 2,305m. Starting from Lake Kawaguchi, you can reach the high-altitude station in about 40 minutes. This route traverses the northern foot of Mt. Fuji, Japan's most iconic symbol, offering a dynamic and breathtaking panorama. Its exceptional scenery earned it a place in the "Top 100 Roads in Japan" in 1987.
Before the opening of the Fuji Subaru Line, the journey to the 5th Station was a grueling trek over unpaved, steep, and winding paths. It used to take nearly three hours to reach the station from Lake Kawaguchi. The completion of the modern, paved road in 1964 revolutionized access to the mountain. The name "Subaru" refers to the Pleiades star cluster (Subaru in Japanese), a name chosen through a public competition, adding a touch of celestial elegance to this vital piece of infrastructure that has played a key role in the tourism development of the Mt. Fuji region.
The route is dotted with natural wonders. As you ascend through the forest zones, the scenery shifts dramatically; you will witness sweeping views of the Fuji Five Lakes below, as well as the majestic Southern Alps, Yatsugatake, and the Chichibu Mountains. The area also features unique high-altitude vegetation, such as the ancient Larch trees found in the 'Oniwa' and 'Okuniwa' scenic spots, creating a landscape shaped by the unique high-altitude environment.
The operating hours of the Fuji Subaru Line vary significantly depending on the month. During the peak summer season (July, August, and September), the road is open 24 hours a day to accommodate many climbers. However, during the winter and other seasons, there are strict time restrictions or temporary closures. For example, in January and February, the road operates from 9:00 to 16:00, with the final descent allowed by 17:00. Because schedules change based on the season, it is highly recommended to check the latest official schedule before your trip.
The primary way to experience this route is via car or bus. The greatest advantage is the ability to reach an altitude of over 2,300m without the physical strain of a long hike or the need for professional climbing gear. Once you arrive at the 5th Station, you can enjoy photography against the backdrop of the majestic Mt. Fuji and take in the vast views. Please note that most of the road lacks sidewalks, so walking is strictly restricted for safety; travel by vehicle is the standard method of movement.
From the starting point in the Lake Kawaguchi area, you can smoothly ascend the altitude via the Subaru Line. The terminus, Mt. Fuji 5th Station, serves as a major hub for tourists and connects to various climbing routes. From the parking lots and observation points along the way, you can enjoy expansive views of the surrounding mountains and the Fuji Five Lakes.
As you will be traveling at an altitude exceeding 2,000m, be prepared for rapid weather changes. Sudden snow or frost can occur, so carrying winter tires or snow chains is highly recommended during the colder months. Temperatures can drop significantly, so bring layers to stay warm. For safety, do not attempt to walk along the road as there are no pedestrian paths. Always check the weather and road conditions, as the road may be closed without notice due to weather or maintenance. Please exercise caution while driving and be mindful of toll payments.
