Aquaworld Oarai Hitachionota is a large-scale aquarium located in Oarai Town, Ibaraki Prefecture, facing the Pacific Ocean. The facility covers a total floor area of approximately 19,800 square meters across five floors. The exhibition tanks hold a total volume of about 5,100 tons of water, showcasing approximately 68,000 specimens across 580 species. It is particularly renowned for its shark collection, boasting the highest number of shark species in Japan (55 species as of 2017). Known as a 'Comprehensive Ocean Museum,' it utilizes unique exhibition methods, including a dedicated tank for the ocean sunfish (Mola mola) and one of the world's largest taxidermy displays.
The facility has a long history, originally opening as the 'Oarai Aquarium' in 1952, and evolving into the second-generation Oarai Aquarium with an attached pool in 1970. After a period of closure for renovation in May 2001, it reopened in March 2002 as the current 'Aquaworld Oarai.' Beyond being a simple exhibition space, it aims to deepen understanding of the global environment and marine ecosystems through museum-style scientific displays. The facility also has a proven track record of protecting its marine life during the Great East Japan Earthquake through rapid evacuation protocols and the use of backup generators and water tanks.
The facility is divided into eight thematic zones. A key highlight is the 'Meeting the Sea Zone' near the entrance, where you can observe the 'Great Tank of Meeting the Sea' filled with approximately 20,000 sardines moving in unison. In the 'Dark Sea Zone,' visitors can experience the atmosphere of the deep sea through various jellyfish species and 3D video effects. Other rare exhibits include one of the world's largest specimens of a tiger shark, a full skeletal specimen of a sperm whale measuring 13.76 meters, and a specialized tank for the ocean sunfish.
Standard operating hours are from 9:00 to 17:00 (last entry at 16:00). Every Saturday, the aquarium hosts the 'NIGHT AQUAWORLD' event, allowing visitors to enjoy a different atmosphere than during the daytime. To avoid crowds from school groups, it is recommended to visit on weekday mornings or during the weekends, particularly during the busy seasons of May-June and September-October. Please note that the facility may close for maintenance in June and December; it is highly recommended to check the official website for the latest information before your visit.
Aquaworld offers more than just observation; it provides educational experiences. For instance, the 'Aquarium Exploration Tour' allows visitors to see the behind-the-scenes aspects of animal care and management. The exhibits are designed to foster a deep understanding of marine biology and the connection between the ocean and the global environment. There is also a dedicated kids' corner, making it an excellent destination for families with children.
The aquarium is surrounded by major leisure spots in Ibaraki. The nearby Hitachi Seaside Park in Hitachinaka City is a famous sightseeing spot known for its seasonal landscapes. The Oarai area also features excellent seafood dining and serves as a transport hub via Oarai Station and Nakasato Station. For those traveling by car, there is ample free parking for approximately 750 vehicles.
The entire facility is non-smoking; smoking is only permitted at designated areas near the large outdoor bus parking lot. Pets are not allowed inside, with the exception of service dogs. Please note that photography may be restricted in certain exhibition areas. While most exhibits are indoors, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes for easy movement. To ensure a smooth entry, it is highly recommended to purchase tickets in advance via the 'asoview!' website, as tickets are generally not sold at the counter on the day of the visit.
