Located just a 5-minute walk from the front exit of Aomori Station, Aomori Gyosai Center (also known as Furukawa Market) is a lively market that serves as a vital hub for the local community. Situated with a view toward Aomori Bay, it offers a direct connection to the region's maritime culture. The biggest draw is the 'Nokke-don' experience, where you become the chef of your own meal. You can browse approximately 30 different stalls featuring fresh scallops from Mutsu Bay, seasonal seafood caught that very morning, and even meat or side dishes. There is no fixed recipe; the bowl is entirely up to your personal taste and creativity.
Aomori Gyosai Center has long functioned as a market deeply integrated into the daily lives of local residents. It is a place where you can directly feel the bounty of the sea, with fresh ingredients arriving straight from local fishermen. More than just a dining area, it is a cultural landmark that represents the culinary traditions of Aori, making it a highly popular destination for travelers seeking an authentic taste of the region. The energetic atmosphere of the market provides a window into the daily food culture of Aomori.

The highlight of the visit is the process of assembling your 'Nokke-don.' After purchasing a specialized food ticket at the information desk, you wander through the market, selecting and adding ingredients to your bowl at various stalls. You will see glistening fresh sashimi, large scallops, and even non-seafood options like meat dishes. The process feels like a treasure hunt as you pick each item one by one. Once your bowl is complete, you can enjoy your creation at the designated rest area while soaking in the lively market atmosphere.
The center opens early, around 7:00 AM, making it an ideal spot for a hearty breakfast or a stop after an early morning stroll. While fresh ingredients are available year-round, the quality and variety of seafood, particularly scallops, are exceptional during peak seasons. Please note that the rice and ingredients may run out once the daily supply is exhausted, so visiting in the morning is highly recommended to ensure the best selection. During the summer 'Nebuta Festival' period, the area can become quite crowded, and operating hours may vary, so it is wise to check ahead.

To create your 'Nokke-don,' follow these steps:
1. Purchase a food ticket at the information desk (e.g., 1 ticket for 190 JPY, or a set of 12 tickets for 2,200 JPY).
2. Visit a stall with a red sign to exchange a ticket for a bowl of rice (e.g., a standard size usually requires 1 ticket for the rice).
3. Visit the approximately 30 different stalls and use your tickets to pick up your favorite sashimi, seafood, or meat toppings.
4. Once your bowl is filled to your liking, enjoy your meal at the rest area within the center.
This interactive process allows you to craft a truly one-of-a-kind seafood bowl.
The area around Aomori Gyosai Center is home to many sightseeing spots and facilities centered around Aomori Station. Notable nearby locations include the Aomori Prefectural Tourism & Leisure Center (ASPAM) and various walking routes around the station. For those traveling by car, it is approximately 15 minutes from the Aomori Chuo IC and 35 minutes from Aomori Airport, making it easy to combine with other local itineraries.
Cash is required to purchase the food tickets (e.g., 1 ticket for 190 JPY or 12 tickets for 2,200 JPY). Please ensure you have Japanese Yen on hand.
While basic guidance is available via signage, and some individual stalls may offer limited English support, the system is primarily based on the visual exchange of food tickets.
No advance reservations are required. You can start your experience immediately upon arrival by purchasing tickets on-site.
Photography is permitted, but please be respectful of other customers and maintain high hygienic standards near food preparation areas.
We recommend wearing comfortable clothing suitable for walking through a market. As the center handles fresh raw food, maintaining cleanliness is appreciated.
The market features many flat walkways, making it generally accessible, though paths can become narrow during peak hours due to crowds.
Because 'Nokke-don' involves fresh raw ingredients, the prepared bowls cannot be taken to-go. If you wish to purchase fresh seafood to take home, please visit the specialized fish shops within the market separately.
