Ashigatakazumi Observatory is a premier viewpoint overlooking the Pacific Ocean, located at the northern tip of Tanesashi Coast in Hachinohe City, Aomori Prefecture. Situated within the Sanriku Fukko National Park, this area is one of the iconic locations of a designated national scenic spot. Perched on the Samekado Cape, the observatory offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the vast Pacific Ocean and the rugged, rocky shorelines below. The landscape is characterized by its dynamic natural beauty, which changes its expression with every season, providing an open and refreshing atmosphere filled with the scent of the sea breeze.
This location holds a historical significance, having been used as a military facility by the former Japanese military toward the end of World War II. Today, it has transitioned into a peaceful public space where visitors can enjoy the sublime natural scenery. The origin of the name is believed to stem from the Ainu language word "Tanne-esashi," meaning "Long Cape." Furthermore, the striking landscape of this region has long served as a source of inspiration for many great artists, including the renowned novelist Shiro Shiba and the famous painter Kaii Higashiyama.
The greatest draw is the magnificent view of the Pacific Ocean from the observatory. The nearby Samekado Lighthouse creates a striking contrast against the cape and the sea, offering a perfect photo opportunity. The observatory also serves as the starting point for the Tanesashi Coast walking trails. As you walk south along the coastline, you can observe diverse geological formations such as rocky shores, sandy beaches, and sea-eroded cliffs up close. The seasonal flora is another major highlight; with over 650 species of plants, including the beautiful beach roses (Hamanasu), the landscape transforms into a vibrant tapestry of colors depending on when you visit.
Ashigatakazumi Observatory offers a completely different charm depending on the season. From spring to summer, the blooming seasonal flowers, such as beach roses, create a colorful and picturesque landscape. A stroll through the fresh, cool breeze of early summer is a uniquely delightful experience. The appearance of the ocean also changes with the time of day, from the bright blue of midday to the serene and calming hues of sunset. Since this is an open-air facility, we recommend visiting on a clear day to fully enjoy the unobstructed views.
Visitors can enjoy a relaxing stroll while observing the local nature. While walking along the well-maintained paths, you can listen to the rhythmic sound of the waves crashing against the rocky shores and feel the coastal terrain. Plant observation is also a popular activity, as you can see various seasonal flowers in their natural habitat. Directly below the observatory lies the Samekado Lighthouse, which is a must-see when visiting. Moving south, the area connects to Osuga Coast, known for its white singing sand beaches and pine groves, and the area around Tanesashi Coast Station, which features natural grass lawns. These areas are all linked by well-maintained walking paths, allowing you to enjoy the scenery on foot. Additionally, the nearby Shirahama Beach is available for those who wish to enjoy seaside leisure activities.
As the observatory is located on a cape, it can be quite windy. We recommend bringing a windproof jacket and wearing comfortable walking shoes. To protect the natural environment, please follow local etiquette: do not touch the plants or leave any litter behind. Regarding payments, please note that cash is generally required if you use nearby shops or services. While some English signage may be available, most information is in Japanese, so we recommend using a translation app or a digital map for a smoother experience.
