Kiyotsu Gorge is a stunning canyon formed by the Kiyotsu River, spanning the areas of Tokamachi and Yuzawa in Niigata Prefecture. Recognized as one of Japan's three major canyons, it is designated as a national scenic spot and a natural monument. The most iconic feature is the approximately 750-meter-long "Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel." This tunnel was redesigned as an art installation by the Chinese architectural group MAD Architects (Ma Yansong) during the 2018 "Echigo-Tsumari Art Triennale." It offers a truly unique space where the raw beauty of nature and modern architectural elegance coexist seamlessly.
The formation of Kiyotsu Gorge is a testament to the grand history of the Earth. The geological layers were shaped by volcanic activity approximately 15 million years ago, and about 7 million years ago, the intrusion of magma created the unique rock formations known as "columnar jointing." Over time, the erosion by the Kiyotsu River carved the deep, beautiful canyon seen today. Historically, the region has been cherished for its hot springs, with Koide Onsen having opened as early as 1801. The name "Kiyotsu Gorge" was officially established in 1934, recognizing its immense academic and scenic value.
The interior of the Kiyotsu Gorge Tunnel is the most captivating part of the experience. Near the end of the tunnel, you will find the "Water Mirror" area, where the scenery reflects off a shallow pool of water. Kiyotsu Gorge presents a completely different face depending on when you visit. The autumn foliage and winter snowscapes are particularly popular and draw many photographers. Please note that during the winter season, access may be restricted or the site may close due to heavy snowfall, so checking the local conditions in advance is highly recommended.
Walking through the tunnel to witness the fusion of nature and art is an experience unique to Kiyotsu Gorge. At the entrance facility, you can relax at the footbath (note: the footbath is closed during winter) or visit the cafe and souvenir shop.
