Yusumi Mizugaura no Danbata is a highly distinctive agricultural landscape located in the Nanyo region of Uwajima City, Ehima Prefecture. The terraced fields, formed by stacking small stones on steep mountain slopes, are often called the "Pyramid of the Uwajima Sea" due to their striking shape. This landscape is more than just a beautiful view; it is designated as a "National Important Cultural Landscape," representing the wisdom of people who have lived in harmony with a harsh natural environment.
The history of these terraced fields dates back to the Edo period. It is said that the third lord of the Uwajima Clan allowed local residents to freely cultivate the mountains in exchange for mandatory sardine fishing. During the Meiji era, as sericulture (silkworm farming) flourished, more stone walls were built to cultivate mulberry trees for silkworm feed. These fields were also vital for producing food like sweet potatoes and wheat. Today, the landscape is preserved through the dedicated efforts of the NPO "Danbata wo Mamorou Kai."
The most breathtaking sight is the contrast between the stone walls rising toward the sea and the fields nestled between them. With an average slope of 40 degrees, the massive stone steps—some over 1 meter high—create a magnificent spectacle. The site is also selected as one of the "Shikoku 88 Scenic Views," allowing visitors to enjoy the harmony of historical rural scenery and the brilliant blue of the Uwajima Sea. The landscape changes beautifully with every season, offering new discoveries upon every visit.
From April to May, the region celebrates the potato harvest season. During this time, the "Furusato Dandan Matsuri" festival is held, where you can witness the lively scene of the first harvest of the season. In August and September, look out for the "Danbata Light-up" events, where traditional bamboo and candle lanterns illuminate the terraces, creating a mystical and ethereal atmosphere in the night stillness.
At the base of the terraces, "Dandan Chaya" offers delicious local cuisine made with fresh, seasonal vegetables and seafood, allowing you to enjoy the bounty of the land. At the souvenir shop "Dandan-ya," you can find unique local specialties, including "Dan-shu," an original shochu made from the potatoes grown in these very terraces. It is a wonderful way to experience the local food culture.
The area around the terraces is rich in the natural beauty of Uwajima. You can find facilities offering fishing experiences and stays at local fisherman's homes (Ryokan/Minshuku) to fully immerse yourself in the gifts of the sea and mountains. The area is also near spots related to the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage, making it a great stop for those following the historic pilgrimage routes.
Due to the steep terrain, please wear comfortable, sturdy footwear. Sneakers or trekking shoes are highly recommended as some areas may be unstable.
