The Ur sumi Rapeseed Flower Fields are a cherished local landmark in Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture. Managed by the local community, these fields create a spectacular 200-meter stretch of bright yellow blossoms right alongside the JR Ai Ai Iyo-nada Line. The primary draw is the striking visual contrast between the vivid yellow flowers and the deep blue of the Seto Inland Sea, offering a colorful landscape that feels like a living painting.
The landscape has a unique history; many of these areas were originally citrus groves (mikan orchards). To revitalize the local community and celebrate the changing seasons, these areas were transformed into flower fields. Today, the fields are meticulously maintained by local residents, preserving a harmonious relationship between the community and the natural environment.
The most iconic experience is watching the arrival of spring. As the rapeseed flowers bloom, they form a golden carpet along the tracks. A highlight for many travelers is riding the JR Ai Ai Iyo-nada Line, specifically the sightseeing train "Iyo-nada Monogatari." Looking out the window as the train passes through the yellow fields provides a breathtaking, cinematic view of the Japanese coastline. Depending on the specific timing, you may also see other yellow-themed flora like mimosa or yellow narcissus.
The peak season for the rapeseed flowers is from mid-February to March. This is the most photogenic window when the blue sea and yellow flowers are at their most vibrant. Additionally, in October, the area can be a site to observe the migration of the butterfly species "Asagimadara" (Striped Swallowtail), offering a different kind of natural beauty for nature enthusiasts.
During the peak season, local events are often held, such as the "Urusumi Rapeseed Flower Festival" in March. During these festivals, you can sample local delicacies like freshly made "Nanohana Mochi" (rapeseed flower rice cakes). The area is also a popular spot for casual walking and nature photography. Please note that the area lacks street lighting, so it is highly recommended to visit during daylight hours.
Near the flower fields, you can find local eateries where you can enjoy the flavors of Ehime. Some shops serve local favorites like Takoyaki, making it a perfect spot to grab a snack while enjoying a stroll.
When visiting, wear comfortable walking shoes suitable for a natural, uneven terrain. As this is a natural area, please be mindful of your surroundings. If you are walking with pets, please keep them on a leash and ensure you clean up after them to maintain the beauty of the site. Since there is no lighting at night, avoid late-evening visits for safety.
