Uwajima Toro is a traditional combat sport deeply rooted in Uwajima City, Ehime Prefecture. Held within a dome-style indoor arena, the spectacle features bulls clashing and executing various techniques against one another. The major tournaments are held four times a year, serving as a unique and vital part of Japan's regional cultural heritage.
The origins of this tradition are steeped in local lore. It is said to have begun in the late 17th century (the 1600s) when two bulls were gifted to local fishermen in Fuura as a gesture of gratitude after they rescued a drifting Dutch ship. Historical documents from the era of the Date clan's administration also describe formal bullfighting held in a ring, proving that this tradition has been passed down through generations for centuries.
The rules of the match are simple: there is no time limit, and the fight continues until one bull retreats or is outmaneuvered. Each bull possesses its own unique strengths, utilizing one of ten distinct categories of techniques to outwit its opponent. The dome-style indoor facility provides an excellent view of the bulls' immense strength and dynamic movements.
Major tournaments are held four times a year: the New Year Tournament (January 2nd), the May Tournament (May 3rd), the Warei Taisai Tournament (July 23rd), and the October Tournament (the 4th Sunday of October or October 25th). Matches generally take place between 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM. Doors open at 10:00 AM, so please check the official schedule in advance to plan your visit.
In addition to the regular tournaments, "Sightseeing Toro" sessions can be arranged through prior application. These private sessions cost 66,000 JPY for one match (1-ketsu) or 132,000 JPY for two matches (2-ketsu), including tax. During major tournaments, free shuttle buses are typically operated from the area around JR Uwajima Station.
The arena is located near JR Uwajima Station, making it easily accessible. The surrounding area features various local sightseeing spots and restaurants. During major tournaments, a temporary parking area for approximately 250 vehicles is available at Maruyama Park Sports Ground.
Eating and drinking are permitted inside the arena, and on-site shops are available. Tickets can be purchased online via FamilyMart (credit cards and FamiPay accepted) or at designated local sales points. Admission is free for junior high school students and younger.
