Uchiko-za is a traditional theater located in the town of Uchiko, Ehime Prefecture. Currently, the theater is undergoing preservation and repair work. During this period, the 'Uchiko-za Backstage' is being opened to the public. This special opening provides information regarding the history of the building and the ongoing preservation efforts. It serves as a unique opportunity for both tourists and local residents to connect with the region's rich cultural heritage.

Because the theater is currently under preservation and repair, the focus is not on regular theatrical performances, but on the special 'Uchiko-za Backstage' exhibition. Visitors can see the history of the theater, learn about the preservation process, and view special exhibitions related to Uchiko-za. It is a rare chance to see the 'behind-the-scenes' area of a traditional theater and understand its deep cultural roots.
The facility is open from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. We recommend visiting during the bright daylight hours to easily observe the details of the exhibits and the architectural features. Please note that the facility is closed during the New Year holidays (December 29 to January 2).
Through the special opening related to the preservation work, you can explore exhibitions regarding the history of Uchiko-za and traditional performing arts. Near Uchiko-za, you can find other significant cultural sites such as the Historical Folklore Museum (Museum of Commerce and Daily Life) and the Wax Museum (Jofoji Residence). A common ticket is available that allows you to visit all three sites (Uchiko-za Backstage, the Historical Folklore Museum, and the Wax Museum), making it easy to plan a cultural sightseeing route through Uchiko.
Please follow all instructions provided by the facility staff. As preservation and repair work is currently underway, there may be temporary road closures or parking restrictions in the vicinity. If you are arriving by car, please check local traffic information in advance. Admission fees are currently set at a special rate for the preservation period: 200 JPY for adults and 100 JPY for students (middle school and younger).
