Tsuwano Castle Ruins is a medieval mountain castle located in Tsuwano, Shimane Prefecture. While the original structures no longer stand, the remarkably well-preserved stone walls remain, allowing visitors to feel the profound weight of history. The site is easily accessible via a sightseeing lift, which provides a unique perspective of the area. From the top of the ruins, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the beautiful, traditional townscape of Tsuwano below. It is a perfect spot to experience both historical remnants and breathtaking natural scenery.
The castle has a long and storied history under various clans. It was ruled by the Yoshimi clan for 14 generations (319 years), followed by the Sakazaki clan for 1 generation (16 years), and finally the Kamei clan for 11 generations (225 years) until the Meiji Restoration. In 1686, the castle was destroyed by lightning, and it was never rebuilt. In 1874, the remaining structures were dismantled, leaving only the stone walls. Today, these ruins are carefully preserved as an important historical site.
The primary highlight is the exceptionally well-preserved stone walls. Near the summit of the ruins, these walls spread out, illustrating the architectural structure of the former castle fortress. The journey itself is part of the attraction; the ride on the sightseeing lift and the subsequent view of the town from the top offer a scenery unique to this location. Although no buildings remain, the shape and scale of the stone walls allow you to visualize the grandeur of the original castle.
The sightseeing lift generally operates from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Please note that from December 1st to the end of February, the lift only operates on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays (except for the period from January 1st to January 5th, when it operates daily). Because the scenery changes with the seasons, we recommend checking the lift schedule before your visit. Occasionally, special light-up events may occur at night.
Visitors can enjoy a unique approach to the castle ruins via the sightseeing lift. The lift serves as the primary access to the site. After disembarking from the lift, there is a walking portion to reach the Honmaru (inner sanctum) area. This combination of a scenic lift ride followed by a walk through the historical site creates a memorable way to explore the castle's history.
The area surrounding the castle ruins is filled with historic streets and traditional architecture. From the lift disembarkation point, you can easily walk to explore the nearby town. Other nearby attractions, such as Taikodani Inari Shrine, can be incorporated into your itinerary to fully experience the historical charm of Tsuwano.
While the sightseeing lift takes you up to the ruins, you will need to walk from the lift station to the Honmaru area. Therefore, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please be mindful of the lift's operating hours, as they vary by season and day of the week. Most importantly, be aware of the final descent time (the last lift down is at 4:20 PM) to ensure you do not get stranded.
