Takinomiya Park is a comprehensive nature park situated in the Kanego-yama hilly area of Niihama City, Ehime Prefecture. Since its establishment in 1956, it has been a beloved destination for local recreation and a place to connect with nature and animals. The heart of the park is the 'Takinomiya Great Pond,' an agricultural reservoir surrounded by a scenic 0.85 km walking path that is perfect for a relaxing stroll or exercise. Visitors can enjoy a diverse range of experiences, from seasonal botanical beauty to the quiet serenity of a traditional Japanese garden.
The area surrounding Kanego-yama holds significant historical weight. During the Tensho era (1573–1593), this location was the site of the residence of Kaneko Bigenokami Motoyasu. Furthermore, the area is historically recognized as a battlefield from the time of Toyotomi Hideyoshi's Shikoku campaign. The peaceful, natural scenery enjoyed today sits upon a landscape once shaped by the history of the samurai, offering a profound sense of time and heritage to those who walk its paths.
The park offers a variety of attractions that captivate visitors of all ages. The most striking feature is the spring bloom, where approximately 1,500 cherry trees (including varieties such as Somei Yoshino, Yoko, and Yamazakura) create a canopy of pink and white. The beautifully maintained Japanese garden also features about 80 plum trees, including varieties like Kanbeni and Tamobotana, which provide a vibrant display of red and white blossoms. For those seeking a view, the 1st and 2nd observation decks offer panoramic vistas of the surrounding landscape. Families can also enjoy the large playground equipped with complex climbing structures and swings, or visit the small animal area to interact with local wildlife.
Takinomiya Park transforms with the seasons. The peak season for both plum and cherry blossoms is from February to April. During the spring cherry blossom season, the 'Hanami Plaza' located in the western part of the pond becomes a lively hub, perfect for experiencing the traditional Japanese culture of flower viewing (Hanami). While the daytime is ideal for exploring the playgrounds and animal exhibits, the late afternoon and evening are wonderful times to visit the observation decks to watch the sunset over the landscape.
There is no shortage of ways to enjoy your time at the park. For active visitors, the 0.85 km loop around the large pond is an excellent route for walking or jogging. Children will love the large-scale combination play equipment and swings available in the playground area. Animal lovers can enjoy observing small animals, such as guinea pigs, in the small animal facility. The Japanese garden also provides a space for mindfulness, featuring rest areas and equipment designed for light physical wellness.
