Shiroyama Park is an expansive park located on a 192m high plateau in Kokubu, Kirishima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The park is renowned for its spectacular panoramic views: to the north lies the Kirishima mountain range, to the south is the majestic Sakurajima volcano, and the view extends to the calm waters of Kinko Bay. The park is packed with diverse recreational facilities, including a children's playground, an outdoor stage, a 1,350m go-kart track, a Ferris wheel, and a pitter golf course. With approximately 30,000 trees of 34 different species, it is a place where you can spend an entire day immersed in nature.
Opened on May 23, 1978, the park covers an area of approximately 158,594 m² and has long been a beloved community space. The park holds local historical significance, featuring a 91-ton C-62 type steam locomotive completed in February 1978. Throughout the year, the park hosts various community events, such as roasted sweet potato festivals and sketching competitions, fostering a strong sense of local culture.
One of the central attractions is the 30m high Ferris wheel, which provides a bird's-eye view of the Kokubu Plain, Sakurajima, and the Kirishima mountains. The go-kart track, measuring about 1,400m per loop, is a major hit alongside the colorful battery-powered cars. For those seeking more active leisure, there is a 9-hole pitter golf course with artificial turf, a children's playground with jungle gyms and slides, and a 6-story observation tower equipped with an elevator for easy access.
The changing scenery throughout the seasons is a major draw. In April, the park is adorned with approximately 630 cherry trees (including Somei Yoshino and Yae-zakura) in full bloom. In May, the landscape transforms with about 30,000 blooming azaleas. Visiting in spring allows you to experience driving go-karts through a tunnel of cherry blossoms. Note that during the peak summer season (July 20th to August 31st), the park operates without scheduled closing days, making it a reliable destination for summer outings. The view at sunset is particularly enchanting.
There is plenty to do for all ages. Enjoy a scenic ride on the Ferris wheel, race around in go-karts or battery cars, or try your hand at pitter golf. The park also offers roller sliders for children. During specific seasonal events, visitors can participate in local cultural experiences such as roasted sweet potato eating, soba noodle making, or even rocket-launching demonstrations.
The park is easily accessible via car: approximately 10 minutes from JR Kokubu Station and about 25 minutes from the Mizoobe Kagoshima Airport IC on the Kyushu Expressway. Given its proximity to the Kirishima mountain range, it serves as an excellent base for exploring the wider Kagoshima region.
Because the park is quite large and features various walking paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. Please note that cash is required for the observation tower entrance and various ride fees. The observation tower is accessible via an elevator, making it barrier-friendly. While photography is permitted, please be mindful of other visitors and maintain proper etiquette in this public space.
