Shirataki Park is a beautiful natural park located in Shirataki, Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, specializing in spectacular waterfalls and seasonal foliage. Covering an area of approximately 53,182 square meters, the park is home to seven distinct waterfalls. It is a famous scenic spot once celebrated by the poet Ujo Noguchi, who described the scenery as "the white falls of autumn, with maple leaves between the trees, spreading a brocade curtain across the mountains." The park is celebrated for its breathtaking natural formations.

The area has long been admired for its natural beauty. It holds a significant cultural connection to literature, particularly through the works of Ujo Noguchi, such as the "Shirataki Kuta" (Shirataki Song). This connection between nature and literature gives the park a unique cultural landscape, with the waterfall scenery serving as a precious local natural heritage.

The park features a total of seven waterfalls scattered throughout the grounds. A major highlight is the dramatic drop of the "Meotaki" (Couple Falls) and the surrounding topography that creates a stunning visual experience. In autumn, the surrounding trees turn brilliant shades of red and orange, creating a striking color contrast against the white cascading water.

Best Seasons & Recommended Times to Visit

The most recommended time to visit is from mid-November to late November, during the peak of the autumn foliage. During this period, the entire mountain is bathed in vibrant colors. We recommend visiting during bright daylight hours to fully appreciate the clarity of the flowing water and the vivid colors of the maple leaves. The park is open year-round from morning until 17:00.

The primary activity is hiking along the well-maintained walking paths. Along the trails, you will find benches and gazebos (rest areas) where you can take a break. Because the terrain has some elevation changes, it is best to take frequent breaks to observe the waterfalls and enjoy the scenery at your own pace.

Surrounding Area

Ozu City is often referred to as the "Little Kyoto of Iyo" due to its preserved historical streetscapes. Nearby, you can explore historical landmarks like Ozu Castle or enjoy the scenic views along the Hime River. You can easily combine a visit to the natural beauty of Shirataki Park with the cultural history of the surrounding region.

For a comfortable experience, wearing sturdy walking shoes or hiking shoes is highly recommended. Since the paths have some inclines and uneven surfaces, stable footwear is essential for safety.
