Shimonada Station is a station on the JR Yosan Line located in Iyo City, Ehime Prefecture. It is a ground-level station with a single-platform structure, where the Seto Inland Sea spreads out immediately before your eyes. The station features a wooden building that has been preserved and renovated over the years, maintaining a nostalgic and historic atmosphere. Because the coastline is so close to the platform, it is a renowned spot for capturing breathtaking views of the ocean from both the train and the station itself.
With a history dating back to its opening in 1935, Shimonada Station has undergone several structural changes, including a transition from an island platform to its current single-platform layout. Inside the station, you can still find remnants of its past, such as the old ticket window used during the era of manual ticketing. A notable feature is the enamel sign that reads "Shimonada," installed by local volunteers in 2014, which represents the deep connection between the station and the local community. Furthermore, the station has a rich musical history; since 1986, the "Sunset Platform Concert" has been held every September, celebrating the station's unique atmosphere.
The most striking feature is the panoramic view of the Seto Inland Sea from the platform. The proximity to the water creates an incredible sense of openness when a train arrives or when you are standing on the platform. The wooden waiting area inside the station allows visitors to soak in a historic, rustic atmosphere. Other highlights include the vintage enamel signs that add character to the station. The colors of the sea and the sky change beautifully depending on the season and the time of day, offering a different experience every time you visit.
The scenery around Shimonada varies beautifully with the seasons. The summer months (July to September) are particularly striking, as the bright sunlight makes the blue of the ocean appear exceptionally vivid. The evening hours are also highly recommended; as the sun sets, the sky and sea are often dyed in brilliant shades of orange and gold, creating a deeply emotional and poetic landscape. While your stay on the platform will depend on the train schedule, timing your visit with a train arrival allows you to witness the shifting light over the water.
At Shimonada, the journey itself is the highlight. For example, traveling from the neighboring Iyo-Uwada Station to Shimonada Station allows you to enjoy the coastal scenery from a train running along the elevated coastline. Visitors can also spend time simply enjoying the historic structure of the station building. Please note that as this is an unstaffed station, the availability of the station facilities depends entirely on the train operating schedule.
The area around the station includes spots like Futami Seaside Park (near Uwada Station). The coastline between Shimonada and Iyo-Uwada is a highly recommended route for scenic train travel. While there is a small parking area near the station, the number of spaces is very limited, so please check the local situation before driving.
