Located in the center of Iwagi Island in Kamijima Town, Ehime Prefecture, Mt. Sekizen (Sekizenzan) stands at an altitude of approximately 370 meters. The greatest draw of this location is the sight of over 3,000 cherry trees blooming across the mountainside in spring. The cherry blossom path, stretching about 4 kilometers along the northern ridge, is so beautiful it is often compared to the 'Celestial Maiden's Robe' (Tennyo no Hagoromo). The sight of the pale pink blossoms dancing against the backdrop of the many islands in the Seto Inland Sea is a quintessential symbol of Japanese spring.
The history of Mt. Sekizen goes beyond mere natural preservation. There was a period when pine trees were heavily harvested for fuel during wartime, but the current landscape of cherry blossoms was shaped by the dedicated hands of the local islanders. What began with a few trees planted by an individual grew into a community-wide tradition. Today, it is a culture where people plant cherry trees to celebrate life milestones, such as graduation from nursery school or 60th birthday celebrations (Kanreki). As the name 'Sekizen' suggests, this 'Island Treasure' has been protected through a spirit of accumulating good deeds and community care.
The ultimate highlight is the 360-degree panoramic view from the summit observatory. Through the blooming cherry blossoms, you can gaze out over the islands that make up the Shimanami Kaido and the Yumeshima Kaido, as well as the calm waters of the Seto Inland Sea. To the northwest, you can see the silhouettes of Ikuchijima and Omishima, while to the east lies Yukijima. Additionally, occasional nighttime illuminations create a mystical atmosphere, where white petals appear to float in the darkness under the moonlight. Along the walking paths, you may also encounter the torii gate of Myoken Shrine, which is related to ancient megalithic worship, offering a blend of nature and culture.
The most beautiful time to visit is during the cherry blossom season from March to April. During this period, the entire mountain is enveloped in a sea of pink. The clear light of the morning makes the white of the blossoms and the blue of the sea stand out vividly, making it perfect for photography. In the evening, the sky turns into a beautiful gradient of pink and orange, creating a deeply emotional and dramatic landscape as the sunset illuminates the sea and the trees.
Activities at Mt. Sekizen primarily focus on hiking and nature walks. If you walk the route starting from Iwaki Sakura Park, you can observe various types of cherry trees, including Somei Yoshino, weeping cherries (Shidarezakura), and Yae-zakura. As you ascend the mountain paths, the scenery transitions from an open park to a serene, quiet forest. Walking through the 'cherry blossom tunnel' offers a special moment to escape daily life. The summit observatory provides a perfect place to relax while gazing at the islands of the Seto Inland Sea.
There are many charming spots around Iwagi Island. You can explore the scenic driving routes along the Shimanami Kaido and the Yumeshima Kaido, or visit the various bridges that connect the islands. The area also features local eateries and accommodations, allowing you to enjoy the peaceful pace of island life. The entire Seto Inland Sea island-hopping experience is enriched by the nearby islands accessible by boat.
