Sankeien is a grand 6-hectare stroll garden (chisen-kaiyu-shiki) created to commemorate the opening of Hiroshima Airport. The garden is designed around the motif of the three landscapes that symbolize Hiroshima Prefecture: the mountains, the village, and the sea. Each zone offers a distinct landscape, allowing visitors to experience the traditional beauty of a Japanese garden within a rich, natural environment.
The garden was developed to express the natural environment of the region alongside the opening of Hiroshima Airport. It incorporates the essence of Hiroshima's mountain valleys and the Seto Inland Sea, divided into three distinct areas: Mountain, Village, and Sea. Each area is composed of artificial hills (tsukiyama), ponds, and paths that weave through the landscape, mimicking the natural topography of the region.
The garden features several striking landmarks that utilize the terrain and water flow. In the 'Mountain' zone, you will find the 'Sandan-no-taki' (Three-Stage Waterfall), where the sound of cascading water creates a serene atmosphere. The 'Village' zone features bamboo groves, plum orchards, and a central pond, recreating the peaceful scenery of a traditional Japanese countryside. In the 'Sea' zone, a vast pond inspired by the Seto Inland Sea hosts the 'Shiomi-tei,' a beautiful Sukiya-style pavilion sitting above the water. These elements come together to create a dynamic stroll garden where the view changes with every step you take.
Sankeien offers a different botanical spectacle every season. In March, the Plum Blossom Festival celebrates the arrival of spring. In May, you can enjoy fresh greenery alongside blooming peonies and azaleas. June is the highlight of the year with the 'Flower Festival,' where approximately 10,000 hydrangeas across 100 varieties color the garden. In November, the 'Momiji (Maple) Festival' brings vibrant autumn colors. For the best experience, visit during daylight hours to see the vivid colors of the plants, or near dusk to see how the light changes the landscape.
The primary activity is a leisurely stroll to appreciate the seasonal flora. During the June hydrangea festival, visitors can wander through the different zones to see the vibrant colors against the backdrop of the traditional architecture. Exploring the area around the Shiomi-tei pavilion and the surrounding bridges offers a perfect way to experience the harmony between man-made structures and the natural water elements.
Sankeien is conveniently located right next to Hiroshima Airport. The surrounding area includes several facilities suitable for light snacks and rest, making it an ideal stop for travelers either arriving in or departing from Hiroshima. It is a perfect place to unwind before a flight or start your journey.
Because the garden features slopes and stone paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes. If visiting during the June flower festival, please prepare a folding umbrella or rain gear for sudden weather changes. Photography is permitted; however, please do not touch the plants or branches. When using tripods or selfie sticks, please be mindful of other visitors and avoid blocking the paths. Payment for individual admission can be made via cash or credit card.
