Ryugado is one of Japan's largest limestone caves, situated in Kami City, Kochi Prefecture. The cave features a mysterious landscape formed over countless years as water droplets dissolved the limestone. In addition to the well-maintained "Sightseeing Course" designed for general tourists, the cave offers more intense experiences such as the "Adventure Course" and the "Nishimoto Cave Course," allowing you to feel the true wonders of nature up close.
Ryugado is designated as a historical site and natural monument by the Agency for Cultural Affairs. The natural formations within have been carefully preserved for many years. To protect the cave's delicate ecosystem, access is regulated based on guidelines from the Agency for Cultural Affairs. For example, the Nishimoto Cave Course is only open from April 29th to September 30th each year, ensuring a balance between environmental conservation and tourism.
The interior of the cave is filled with diverse and breathtaking stalactite formations. On the standard Sightseeing Course, visitors can walk along well-maintained paths and enjoy the ethereal scenery illuminated by lights. For those seeking a more stimulating experience, the "Adventure Course" is highly recommended. Led by a professional navigator, you will navigate through the darkness for approximately 200 meters, crawling through narrow passages and climbing wooden ladders—an experience that provides a thrill unlike anything in daily life.
While Ryugado is open year-round, specific courses have restricted availability. For instance, the Nishimoto Cave Course is only open from April 29th to September 30th. Please note that due to weather conditions, cave entry may be canceled unexpectedly even with a reservation; it is important to check the local weather on the day of your visit. Visiting during bright daylight hours also allows you to enjoy the natural environment surrounding the cave entrance.
This is more than just a simple sightseeing spot; it offers active, hands-on experiences. The "Adventure Course" is a program where you can experience true darkness and silence alongside a professional guide. Equipped with a helmet and headlamp, you can challenge yourself against the raw, natural terrain, which provides high levels of satisfaction. Additionally, rental items such as coveralls and boots are available to help you enjoy a more authentic and comfortable exploration.
Near the cave exit, you will find rest areas, museums, and shops. For example, the "Exit Free Rest Area Komorebi" and the Ryugado Museum offer places to relax and unwind after your exploration. There are also souvenir shops nearby where you can experience the local culture of Tosa.
The interior of the cave is humid, so wearing clothes that can get wet is essential. If you are participating in the Adventure Course, please be sure to bring a change of clothes and a towel. It is recommended to avoid wearing raincoats or windbreakers that trap heat. Since you may get wet or dirty, prepare your footwear accordingly. Please note that cave entry is restricted to elementary school students and older; those with physical disabilities or mobility issues should consult with staff in advance.
