Ozu Castle is a historic fortification located in Ozu City, Ehime Prefecture, featuring a beautifully reconstructed main keep (tenshukaku). The site's history dates back to the late Kamakura period, and throughout the Sengoku and early Edo periods, it was shaped by many renowned daimyo (feudal lords). The history of Ozu Castle traces back to the Jizo-ga-take Castle, built by the regent Utsunomiya Toyofusa during the late Kamakura period. Over the centuries, the site was developed into a sophisticated early modern fortification by legendary figures such as Kobayakawa Takakage, Toda Katsutaka, Todo Takatora, Wakisaka Yasuharu, and Kato Sadayasu. The area is rich with historical structures that are carefully preserved as local cultural assets. The main attraction is the architectural beauty of the castle keep. Scattered throughout the grounds are historical structures that evoke the atmosphere of old Japan, such as the Koran-yagura (balcony turret) and Daidokoro-yagura (kitchen turret), some of which are designated as important cultural properties. The surrounding landscape changes beautifully with every season, offering a serene view of nature alongside the historic stone walls. Ozu Castle offers a different charm throughout the year. During the cherry blossom season, special events like the 'Ozu Castle Yozakura Marche' are held, where you can enjoy the illuminated castle under the night sky. Additionally, 'Octor Castle Night Tours' are sometimes conducted, allowing visitors to experience the mystical atmosphere of a castle at night. During the daytime, it is highly recommended to visit to see the intricate details of the architecture and the surrounding natural-light scenery.
Beyond standard sightseeing, Ozu Castle offers the incredibly rare 'Ozu Castle Castle Stay.' This special program allows you to spend a night inside the reconstructed castle tower. Guests can experience the life of a feudal lord, complete with a traditional welcome by armored warriors, performances of traditional arts, and exquisite local cuisine. This initiative is part of a larger effort to preserve and pass down the region's cultural heritage.
The area surrounding Ozu Castle is filled with historic streetscapes. The nearby town preserves the atmosphere of an old castle town, with many cultural properties and historic buildings scattered throughout the area, perfect for a leisurely stroll. The scenic routes along the Hiji River also offer beautiful views of the castle from a distance.
As the castle contains many historical structures, there are several stairs and uneven surfaces. We recommend wearing comfortable clothing and sturdy walking shoes.
